On our first day in Melbourne we hunted for a rental car to drive the Great Ocean Road. Once that was sorted we had a mooch around the city. We walked along the riverside and around the outside of Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). There were loads of bronze statues honoring sporting greats in the AFL and Cricket world. As we headed back to our hostel we walked through Federation Square, an area in the city, and stopped for some free food at the food and wine festival. (Sadly no free wine.) There were loads of deckchairs out and food themed films being shown so we took a pew and watched a German film. By the time the film had finished it was dark so we took a walk along the river into Southbank. There were endless bars and restaurants which all looked really nice (and sadly a tad too expensive for our budget). Further along the river is the Crown Casino which is absolutely huge! Infront of the casino was the fire show which we watched for a bit.
The following day we picked up the car and made our way to St Kilda's beach with friends we met in the hostel. The beach was a let down but theres plenty of bars and backpackers about so we knew why everyone loved it so much. The shoreline on the shingle beach was swamped with giant jellyfish! We checked out the Elephant and Wheelbarrow (the Neighbours night pub) before heading back to begin the Paddys day celebrations. Although we stayed away from Australias poor excuse for Guiness, we had a few green beers and irish themed shots to begin our night. We left the hostel in search of a good pub, but each and everyone had masses of people waiting to get in. As the best pubs were filled five hours ago, and the rest had nothing Irish about them other than the shamrocks they'd put up, we went back to the hostel. We left Melbourne the next day and headed to the Great Ocean Road.
