Simon & Kim's Global Adventure
Getting to Quebec was a pain! When we arrived at the bus station ready to go, they told us we'd have to pay for extra tickets as Greyhound buses don't travel there. It wasn't cheap but seeing as though we were meeting people and had already paid accommodation we decided to go. After all the stress we arrived at the hostel to meet up with friends we had made earlier that week at Niagara Falls. When checking into the hostel the manager explained to both me and Kim that there was free nightly entertainment in the city during our stay!
Around 7pm, after beers on the rooftop, we got ready and made our way to queue up for the free outdoor Cirque du Soleil show being held beneath the underpass. The queue was massive but we still managed to get a good spot. Lasting an hour the show told a story through various performers and acts. The costumes and makeup were amazing. Stilts that had bird shaped moving mechanisms attached were worn by some performers. The variety of performances was so vast but the show made it all blend together so well. Each performer was beyond brilliant at their circus act. To see rope climbers grasping with their toes and people doing spinning cartwheels inside a hula hoop was amazing. Awesome acrobats, fire shows and balancing beam tricks constantly kept the audiences attention. The most painful to watch was the Chinese ladies contorting their bodies in a range of ways! We were all amazed at how brilliant the show was and we were beyond pleased that we hadn't forked out hundreds of dollars back in Las Vegas! It definitely is the best circus show either of us have seen!
The next morning we made our way into town. The cobbled streets and old squares were filled with art and colour. Compared to the other Canadian towns we'd visited, French was consistently spoken. After wandering round the streets we took the cable car up to the high point of the town. There were more shops, fountains and endless performers entertaining the crowds. It was lovely to wander round and listen to the street music. A famous hotel that stood in this area of town was where Churchill, Roosevelt and others planned D-Day. After lunch we walked past the artist alley and wandered round a market near the waterfront before returning to our hostel. On the roof top we sat and had a few beers before watching another light projection show. It was very similar to the one we had previously seen in Ottawa. Again, it was a night filled with completely free entertainment!! We enjoyed the beers and snacks and ended up splashing around in a fountain on the way home!
On our last day we took a bus to Montmorency Falls. Although less famous, they are actually 30m higher than Niagara. It was an awesome fall and we were lucky to see it on such a clear sunny day. We walked down the stairs to the bottom and popped into the touristy shop. Inside were pictures showing the falls in winter frozen over and glistening white which was amazing. After clambering back up the 476 steps we chilled out on the other side of the river watching locals swim and dogs cooling off. It was a lovely day. We said goodbye to James and Sarah who were heading across Canada. Early the next morning we left, (sneakily without paying our full bill as no-one asked for it), and caught a bus to Montreal.
