Simon & Kim's Global Adventure
Our Montreal hostel was one of the strangest! The dorm room was the living room, people slept on beds and sofas and even hammocks which hung above the beds. Outside bunks were under a small shelter although not completely protected from the elements. We were grateful that we booked a private room! As we walked around Montreal we passed many people sitting out in the sun enjoying lunch and drinks. Although the buildings didn't have alot of character, the town was quite pretty. It was quite an arty place and they'd even painted all the parking meters. On the first day we walked into town and looked around the Notre Dame Cathedral. Inside the decor was very impressive. The ceiling was dark blue with gold stars and the rest of the sanctuary was rich in colour. There were intricate carvings and the windows depicted scenes from Montreal's religious history. There was also a giant pipe organ that had four keyboards and numerous other organ things that required a highly trained organist. The current organist has been playing for just under forty years!
On our second day we walked up to the Mont Royal Church. It stood high on a hill and we got great views of the city. The church has apparently the second biggest dome in the world. Inside was pretty plain so we walked through quickly and began to walk to Mont Royal Park. The park was the highest spot in the city so we had great views. After sunbathing and reading we walked up to the top and stopped at look-outs and the cross. As we made our way down we got completely lost on dirt tracks and ended up walking in circles!
