We spent 4 days and 5 nights in León. One more than planned because I (Simon) got ill on our second day. To be honest León wasn't our favourite place but to be fair it didn't have a fair chance to impress us because I was ill and because it was so hot (36C but felt like 39C according to the internet).
During our stay we visited a contemporary art gallery (listed as one of the best in Central America), watched the Saturday night celebrations in the main square which included fire juggling and visited a few of the churches and the cathedral. The cathedral was very impressive. One of our favourite places was the supermarket because of the air conditioning.
On Sunday (13th July) we watched the World Cup final at a bar which was full of locals; mostly supporting Argentina but some also supporting Germany. They had gone to the effort of getting dressed up in the teams' colours and the atmosphere was fantastic.
The best thing we did was to go the museum of the Revolution, where we got shown around by an ex-guerrilla. He was 17 years old when he joined the war in which his mother and two brothers had been killed. We saw pictures of him in his uniform and he said he had fought in the building we were standing in. I was glad Katy could translate for me because he didn't speak English apart from one-line movie quotes. He took us into a really small room in the building which smelt of urine and started telling us that the government used it to store over 30 prisoners. He then said that when they captured the building they found 20 dead bodies in the room - that was almost too much for me and already being ill thought that I was going to be sick. We bought a DVD documentary from him at the end so now only need to find a DVD player and a TV (a hard ask) to watch it.

Diane Malone HI, Hope your are feeling better by now Simon. Museums are always a nice place to hang out when the weather is ghastly hot. Did that myself all through So. E. Asia. World Cup fever was very big here at home. Travel well, travel safe. djm
