Up bright and early this morning! It's time for Tulum :) We packed our last few things, headed for a quick breakfast and walked to the port in time for the 9am ferry! After a windy ride back to Cancun, we negotiated a cheap ish taxi to the ADO bus terminal where we would catch the bus to Tulum... (Even though the taxi driver would try convince us to have him take us "direct to our hotel" for "only $80 USD"...
The bus ride was incredibly pleasant, with air con and everything... It took us about 2.5 hours to get to Tulum, after one stop in Playa del Carmen... We then got a taxi from Tulum town to the "beach strip" where there is just hotel after hotel for miles... But these are no ordinary hotels. Tulum is very Eco-friendly and most hotels are run using solar or wind energy. Some consist of cabanas on the beach, others you can simply pitch a tent... They are gorgeous! We are staying at a beautiful family-run place called OM Tulum... Our electricity curfew (according to the reviews) is from 8am to 11:30pm (using the last bit of light and battery to type this)... Our room has two double beds with mosquito nets around them (MUCH needed! I am apparently a form of food these mozzies have never had before as I swear I have been bitten over 30 times since we've arrived... And using repellent!!), and incense is burning from our Buddha statue on the counter top... The beach just in front of our hotel has all sorts of loungers, beach beds and hammocks!!! The heat is insane but there is a cooling breeze on the beach side which makes it perfect to be there... After we had checked in, we took a quick walk along the road - very rapidly turning back after being attacked by the mozzie army- and had a delicious lunch on the beach, lazed in the hammocks, read in the sun and snoozed (you can see the pattern developing... This is paradise!) At around 6pm we took a very long walk all the way along the beach and back and marveled at the cute set ups on the strip... I had an amazing swim in the ocean when we got back! Life is just too good right now...
We had spotted a seafood restaurant right by our hotel called Simple so after showering and changing, we headed there for dinner... And I think I had the best seated tuna dish of my life! We were in total silence for the duration of the meal as it was so incredible delicious :) The staff were so so friendly and made some good recommendations for our stay here (which we have already extended by another night)... The chef insisted we try his family-made tequila (went down like nails but when in Mexico I guess?!) and we are now in bed, reading like a bunch of grannies and waiting for our lights to go out... I am in love with Tulum! Couldn't be luckier to be here...
Lesson of the day: Do not travel to Tulum without being lathered in mozzie repellent!!
Moment of the day: Swinging in my hammock on the beach while staring out at the ocean... Bliss!!
