Vicky and Natalie's Adventures
Since San Pedro our itinery has been very relaxed...in that it didn't really exist and even the ones we made have changed. We first went to a town called Calama but only so we could go to the supermarket and stock up. I also visited a nearby copper mine...my goodness! The mine was gigantic, as were the trucks. They shifted something like 2 million tonnes of rock a day with only 10% being copper. We then drove off and pulled up somewhere along the Pan American Highway for the night. It was a very cool little camp spot in the middle of nowhere. Natalie and I were cooking that night...we did 3 courses but were still cooking pancakes at midnight, oh dear! The next day we went to see the hand in the desert...very odd! We camped a night on a deserted beach near Pan de Azucar national park which was fab. Trying to leave the next day was difficult...the truck got stuck in the sand after having to push start her as the batteries were flat! It took 2 hours to get the truck out, so we're now very used to pushing it! We visited a groovy little town on the coast called Huasco. Not much going on there but we found an awesome little bar on the front where we met a lovely chilean girl and drank cocktails! La Serena is a very popular beach with young Chileans. There are lots of groups of teenagers on vacation as their schools are 'out for summer'. There are big parties going on on the beach with stages set up for live bands. The sky here is really clear and there are lots of observatories around. We went to one which was cool but as it was for tourists there weren't any massive telescopes to play with...just fairly small ones. We got to see lots though and it shut me up for a while! The town in La Serena is very quaint but has a big wine store...!
