Travels through Tartary
We set off into the desert from Turpan and ran straight into a sandstorm. The wind was sufficient to slow us down to 30km/h and we made a gand total of 200km into the wind on the first day, stopping at 19:30 to make camp.
Camping that night was interesting, sleep only came after I'd wrapped a sheet around my head to keep the sand out of my mouth and nose while I slept.
On the second day we had the wind (and the inevitable rain) at our backs and covered 500km by lunchtime.
We're now in Dunhuang, close to the westernmost end of the Great Wall. We've seen grottos and caves; big buddhas and little buddhas and, best of all, monster sand dunes (I've spent most of the afternoon sliding down sand dunes on a piece of plywood - great fun).
Tomorrow we head to Jiayuguan which has the westernmost fort on the great wall. It's made of mud. As we're bush camping again it's highly likely that the fort will be washed away by tomorrow evening. Watch this space.
