From Ao Nang we booked our ticket to Koh Samui which included a bus to Surat Thahini which is the main port to the islands on the East of Thailand. This journey was not a good one. It was filled with some annoying people and situations. We were collected from our guest house but a pick-up truck come taxi which took us to the bus station in Krabi town. We were then told to wait 40 minutes before the bus that went to Surat Thahini arrived. That bus arrived on time and no problem, we got on it and off we drove (much slower and more carefully than in Malaysia I might note) to what we thought would be the Port to Koh Samui. However we were dropped off in Surat Thahini town and told to get in another taxi who would take ud to the port...but did he? NO; He took us to a resturant and told us we had time and did we want food? No we replied so we just sat there playing s*** Head for 40 minutes more until we got in the taxi again and drove to hopefully the port... But did he take us their? NO! He took us to another resturant and that was where the bus would pick us up to take us to the port, 71km out of town?! Why had we been carted around from place to place? Simply because they wanted us to buy some food! Hahahaha. Not funny, I wasn't happy at all. We had to wait another hour before we got on the bus and then it took another hour to get to the port and the boat we got on was at 6pm...the time we had been told we would arrive!
We eventually got to Koh Samui at about half past 8 and instead of paying a day fare taxi which would have been about 1pound, we had to pay a night fare and that was 12pounds, not the best day of my life by a long way! We eventually got to Chaweng which is a hell hole of over developed shops, resturants and very noisy taxis tooting every 2 seconds to ask if you want a ride! NOOOOOOO!!!!
We found an okay-ish bungalow for more than we wanted to fork out an went out for some food! The first positive thing to come out of that day was that Matt had the best Pad Thai he's ever tasted...that was about it though! We went to bed and the next morning realised we didn't want to stay their another second and got on a boat to Koh Phangan which was nicer, cheaper and sunner!
On the boat we met a thai man called Toni?! Who had a londoners accent and he let us know about coral bungalows which was where he worked. It had cheap rooms for 3pounds a night and the complex had a swimming poool, gym and was right next to the beach! It also had a nice cheap resturant- we spent alot of time their!
We did venture out though and into the main bit of Haad Rin which most of the bars and resturants are. All the resturants at 3pm, 5pm, 7pm and 9pm showed films- some of which have only just come out in the cinema- tututut! so we had the pick of what we watched over dinner which was nice! After that most of the action takes place on the beach! More fire shows, pretty same samey to Phi Phi but funnier because the thai guys purposely tried to burn the tourists- actually not that funny but serves them right! The beach is where all the drinking takes place and all the buckets of samsong or vodka are sold, for a very cheap price! One bucket would last all night too! We did this most nights and by the third night we could predict which song would come next!
One day we hired a quad bike and Sammy and Chris hired a bike and drove to the North West of the island where chris had found a good snorkelling spot. I was pretty unsure about this quad bike thing from the start because we we scratched or dented etc the damn thing we would have to fork out hundreds of pounds so I was scared about that! I was also scared because the roads were mental! So I clung onto Matt for the whole journey there.
The snorkelling was amazing and i saw lots of fish :) the reef was really shallow for ages but then got deep all of a sudden and I got scared because I was out of my depth! But it was ok in the end- I survived!
The journey back on the quad bike was no better and to top it all off we ran out of petrol, we had filled up on the way buty matt had been going for it and revved out all the fuel...great! However we met some nice Thai guys who went and fetched us some gasoline and off we went again! We got back safe and sound and no charges for us :)
Koh Phangan was a really nice place to spend some time, however it does get a bit repetative but then most places do after a while! And so we decided our next stop would be the beautiful island of Koh Tao...
