From Melaka me and matt got on another bus and travelled to Mersing, this is the port where you get the boat to the Tioman Island from! Our journey from Melaka was much smoother than the journey from Singapore to Melaka! Matt made sure he went to the toilet about 3 times before we left!
Mersing is a pretty average place, it has a sign like Hollywood's though! We found a place to sleep after alot of walking around (thanks to the lonely planet's 2 recommended hostels shut down!) and we got a bit of a bargin, a room with air-con for 3pounds each!
The next morning we were up bright and early(ish) for our boat to Tioman and whilst we were waiting for it to arrive we saw Maja randomly with about 40 kids waiting for a boat aswell!
The boat journey was about 2 hours and was really pretty with lots of islands dotted about, some inhabitted.
Once we arrived on Tioman we went to find some accomodation and found a really nice beach hut with everything we needed- a bed, a fan, a bathroom/wetroom and a balcony with 2 chairs and a table for watching the sun down and playing cards! And it was all for 30rm!
SAo we did a bit of sight seeing after dumping our bags and saw a couple of monitor lizards that to be honest are almost as big as crocodiles! We also saw a python wrapped around a tree and some sort of tree squirell! There were also some very cocky monkeys that instead of running away came closer- eek!
We found Matt a diving course to do which was 4 days long and 200pounds so not bad! He was the only person signed upto start that day so it was just him and his instructor, thats what I call value for money!
So for the next 4 days he was getting up at 8.30am and going diving whilst I went off to the beach and sunbathed, read, had lots of milkshakes and chatted to other travellers!
In the evenings when Matt was all finsihed we met up with the dive instructors and the other divers doing various courses from their advanced course to their dive masters! The beer was cheap and food cheaper so we can't complain!
The pace of life on tioman is nice a relaxed, the cost of living is low you could spend a lifetime their on te smallest amount of dollar!
All the beachs are connected by some sort of path, the beach we stayed at called ABC or Air Batang has just one path connecting all the hostels, bars and the jetty. The path also takes you along the headland to the islands main town called Tekek, that is where you will find the only ATM on the island and the smallest airport I have ever seen!
There is also a duty free shop which sells beer cheaper than water! And I found a very large bottle of vodka for about 5pounds!
I had such a good time their, me and Matt have already spoken about going back. We spent 6 nights their and we could have spent 6 months! There are many people on the island that have gone for about a week and a year later they still havent left!
The snokelling on Tioman is also pretty good, very pretty fish and beautiful coral! But diving seems to be the done thing!
Tioman = Paradise!!
