OK so we are back. Sorry it has been such a longtime but we have just been so crazy busy and to be honest there arent so may internet cafes.
Our flight to Delhi was uneventful except for the fact that no one listened about cell phones and used them up until at least 10 minutes into the flight. We arrived in Delhi around 4am and where meet there by someone from the tour company. We decided we would have a tour organised as we only had 12 days for India and Nepal. If we did it ourselves it wouldnt of cost much less and we would not of seen as much and learned as much about the places that we visited as we would of spent half the time organising everything. We got to the hotel around 5am and they kindly let us in a room so we took the chance to get some sleep. Woody (from South Africa) and Tomo(from Japan) arrived around 2pm. It was great to see them here nice and safe.
So the first time was free time to do whatever we liked, the man issue was in fact going to get money as we owed them for the tour. After we accomplished that with a few probems we decided to go for a ride around the city. Of course there are tons of tuk tuk's outside the hotel. If you dont know what that is it is a three wheeled car that is popular in asia as a taxi as it is small and you can fit many people in it. So we haggled with a few and struck a deal to go shopping to see the prices. We were taken to this place for tourists only which had carpets/jewels/clothes etc... and the prices where all high, high even if it was in the US. So we decided we wanted some food. We found a cheap place that was busy and enjoyed our first of many currys. We were all full for $10, so not so cheap.
After visiting a few more places we found out that the tuk tuk driver gets a lunch coupon from all the different stores we got to. So we struck a deal.....we will go to a few places and they will lower the cost of the ride. In the end they showed us around for 4 hours and we only paid $3. So all were happy and we didnt buy much. We learnt that day that we will never get the true price for anything and someone always had a hidden agenda. This is true of our whole trip to date. We then went back to the hotel and talked until very late.
Day 2 was a full city tour day. Unfortunately we had read that the monsoon was due to hit this day, it being a 108 year record for earliest time of the year. Our tour guide meet us at the hotel with our very friendly driver Nidheesh. We visited old and new Delhi, many Hindu temples, lots of old British buildings, and a Mosque. Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. It rained on and off throughout the day, but we bought umbrellas at the beginning. One thing that could not be hidden was the fact that there was trash everywhere!! I mean everywhere, usually mixed in with dirt. It was also strange to see animals everywhere, there are dogs, cows, bulls, monkeys, elephants, goats, sheep just walking around the city doing whatever. Well the elephants were all controlled by someone, but the others werent. Our driver said that the farmers just let the cows out in the morning and then they always come back at night as he feeds them well.
Delhi is a crazy city.....so many people, so many cars, so many motorbikes........ I would have to say Birla temple was my favourite as we got to learn a lot about the Hindu religon and their millions of gods. We also all got red dots on our forehead, yes I know I should know what this is called but I forget right now. The guide also took us to a place for lunch, it was ewtremely fancy and it cost 500 rupies, about $12. We were angry as we want to eat at cheap places. But lesson learned. That night we went for a walk around the hotel and had a few drinks, I have never seen bottles of whiskey cheaper anywhere in my life.
Day 3 we left Delhi for Jaipur. We were starting to think that India is actually an expensive country.....well Delhi at least.
Well I have to go, more as soon as I have a chance.
