We woke up today at 6am and I know for most people at home that doesn't really sound early but when you're not used to it you really feel it! So after checking out we were all made to watch this really boring film about rules and regulations on what to do and not to do on the island. We were then split into five groups and we wer immediately swapped into another group. Before we were able to get our cars we needed to sort out drivers, bonds ext. As my proof of a driving licence was lost in Shanghai I was unfortunately not allowed to drive which left us with two drivers, Candy and another girl Kim.
After collecting our car and packing it up we all went for a communal shop at the supermarket. During this you could already feel that there was going to be some te nsion in the group although I was hoping it was just because everyone wanted to make sure they had something that they liked to eat. We made our way next to the Frerry that would take us over to Fraser Island.
We ended up being at the back of the cars on the track when we got there, this was because we discovered that one of our coolers was leaking : S. With slow cars and others getting stuck in the sand in front of us we were starting to run out of time to make it to our campsite in time before the tide came in. Luckily though we managed to ge to the beach just in the nick of time and made our way to our campsite.
Unfortunately when we were setting up camp the divide in the group really started to begin. The girl Kim decided to go off straight away with another group who had just laid into Candy about her drivin g who had done a spectacular job, and she didn't help us set up camp or with any of the cooking, but made sure she got her share and ate with the other group. Once we'd cleaned up, the two lad with us from Canada went off to find their friends from Byron Bay, leaving us with the couple from Israel. We all had a good chat but ended up having a fairly early night.
Our next day was another early start due to the sunshine and heat of the tent. After breakfast and packing up, notably again without the help of Kim, we all made our way t oour first sight of Fraser, Eli Creek. I have to say I wasn't very impresses as it was just a little stream with a bridge. But at least it gave us something to do before we were allowed to drive due to the restrictions of the tide. So at 10am we made our way up the coast, stopping off for ice, water and getting rid of our rubbish. We also made a stop a the 'wreck' a bit of another dissapointment so we didn't stay long. There was also absoloutely no infornmation about what the boat was for, what happened to it or even when it became a 'wreck'. Even though it was real it just looked like something disney had put in the middle of a theme park.
We carried on up the beach to the look out point India Head. The views here were lovely. But I think that we realised how much we'd been spoilt in Asia as it was beautiful just not as beautiful as some of the things that we'd seen. We did manage to spot some massive sting rays though which were pretty cool. We then wrongly thought that the rock pools below were the champayne pools that was next on our itinerary. We wondered why we weren't that impressed. But we spoke to another group who had actually made it to the pools and they said they were cool but also nothing special.
So we drove all the way back down the beach, back to the point that we started at the previous day. I think it took us about an hour although I couldn't be too sure as I was asleep for most of it until Candy drove over a particularly nasty stream on the beach that even managed to splash through the window! I was definately awake after that. We then had a late lunch of Spagetti Bolognaise. Was very yummy if I do say so myself. Obviously through lunch Kim was again nowhere to be seen but to be honest we were now beyond caring! We then made camp and attempted to go and find Lake Wabby. But it was starting to get dark and the tide was comming in so after a little while we gave up and made our way back and chilled out with another group from our hostel. The lads did make it to the lake however and they said that the walk wasn't really worth it so we felt much better.
The evening consisted of a mini bbq, cooking up all the meat as it wouldn't last till the next day although we saved most of it for sandwiches the following day. In the campsite ajacent to us though was a massive party that was going on so we made our way over there, where we found our friends that we had made in the hostel and ended up playing an Israeli card game called Yanif! It was alot of fun but again I think that's because I kept winning : ) hehe! Later on in the evening the party moved onto the beach complete with music blaring out and floodlights! We thought at the time it was really late but we were actualluy tucked up in bed at 12.30!!!
Can you guess? We had another early morning! We were on our way by about 8.30am, deciding as a group not to go and see Lake Wabby but instead taking a scenic route to take us to Lake Mackenzie. En route we had to be good samaritans and help another group find a car that had jump leads as their battery was dead!
We got to Lake Mackenzie about 10.30am and I have to say that it made up for the other dissapointments of Fraser! It was beautiful! The water was so clear and the beach was beautifull. If you were to come to Fraser I would suggest to spend most of your time here! Unfortunately my good mood was shortlived as my water bottle leaked in my bag damaging my camera, phone and ipod all in one go : (
We left ourselves plenty of time to get to the Ferry port and were back on the mainland by 5.30pm to unload the car and to clean and tidy everything up before getting back to the hostel. Then we had a mad 2hours having to sort out our bags, have showers and have dinner before we got our greyhound. Something I was not looking forward to with no music. Luckily though to make things better we both managed to get our own chairs and I took my sleeping bag as a pillow so I got some sleep to make the time go quicker.
