My journey to KL took the whole day. I left Langkawi at 8am and arrived at my hostel at 10.30pm. It didn't help that the bus left 45mins late and then broke down en route. But I suppose that's all part of the fun of travelling. But I made it and that's the main thing.
My hostel is basic but very clean and I have my own room again which is really nice. I'm staying at the Mati Hari Lodge that was recommended to me by two different people so I thought I might as well check in here.
My first full day in Kl I thought that I got up fairly early / reasonable time to make it to the Petronas towers before all the tickets went, but at breakfast I got talking to a really nice South African couple that actually live in Chiswick, so I ended up getting there at 9.30am which was too late. I'm really glad that I spoke to the couple though because they gave me some tips on South Africa and said that if I get into any trouble whilst I'm there that I can contact them / their family. I thought this was really nice of them. They were unfortuntely leaving that morning to make their way to Melaka but I'm going to meet up with them in Singapore.
So as plan a) the Petronas towers was now out of the question I wasn't sure what to do with my day. So I decided to take the hop on hop off bus around the city so that i could see as many of the sights as possible. In a day I managed to go to a craft place, the grand palace, Medaka square, the national monument, the lake gardens including the orchid gardens and the hibiscus garden which is the national flower of Malaysia. It was a really nice walk. I then tried to find Kota Bahru the Malaysian part of KL but as I was walking there it felt a little eery and started to rain so I made my way back to the art gallery that I then went around. It was so interesting as it had modern artwork from artitsts all across Asia. This was a highlight for me. After this I was shattered so I made my way back to the hotel.
Here I bumped into two girls that were just checking into the hostel so I asked both of them if they wanted to go for food later. One of them also had her cousin that was joining her. Before we went for food we checked out the Central Market, but there wasn't much to see here. I didn't really click with the two cousins but I really got on with the Finish girl Meena. Anyway we went for food at a place that two girls had recomended to me in Langkawi. The food was so good! I had sizzling black pepper venison with egg fried rice. Dad you would have loved it, the meat just melted in your mouth! So good!
The next day I got up super early and went with Meena to the Petronas towers determined not to miss out this time, we got there at 7.45 at had to que for an hour and a half, but we managed to get tickets for 10.45am. Whilst we waited for our slot we checked out the mall that was in the towers, they everything in there including another La Senza, it was pretty similar to the one in Bangkok, not very exciting and nothing from Aura there.
Before we were allowed to go up into the towers we had to watch a very cheesy video all anbout how much Malaysia owed and loved the Petronas company! It was actually quite funny. So we eventually went up the towers to the skybridge. We had 10mins, although it felt alot shorter. The views were ok but not spectacular. It's something that I'm glad I done but I think if I had to pay for the ticket I would've been dissapointed.
The rest of the day we took quite slow, Meena had a few days in KL so didn't need to rush and I had seen so much the previous day that I was also happy to just chill out. So we grabbed some food and made our way back to the hostel for a cup of tea and rest.
We then ventured back out to book my bus ticket for the following day to the Cameron Highlands and then we went to a Hindu temple that Meena really wanted to see. It wasn't as impressive as those in India and we were both a bit dissapointed with it. So we went for the internet and then made it back to the hostel just in time before the heavens opened. The rain just wouldn't stop, which meant that we changed our evening plans which was to eat in Little India and go to the nigh market to eating somewhere local. We got chatting to a lovely man Davis who uses KL and the Mati Hari lodge as his second home / base to go around the Asia diving. He was also someone that Ken and Iris had spoken alot about so I felt that I already knew him. So he took us to a really nice Indian restaurant where we had tandoori chicken and naan with dahl and another vegetable dip. It was so good and I never thought after India that I would be excited to have Indian food as a change!
We then went back to the Hostel and with a cup of tea (I'm loving Malaysia's love for tea! It's always on tap!) and watched the latest James Bond. A good way to finish the day.
