I finally got to go to the Blue Mountains today - not that I got to see anything as the whole place was covered in fog! It was so ridiculous, that I just had to keep laughing on my way around the place.
The train ride up to the mountains was really nice, so I got to see a bit of scenery that was under the fog. As we made our way further up on the train, the fog just crept in and didn't stop. Oh dear, I thought, not a good sign. However, Margaret (she accompanied me to Katoomba so she could go antiquing up there as there are good shops for that sort of thing apparently) thought that perhaps the fog would lift by the time I got there. I did hope so, but it actually just got worse!
I did think about just turning straight back after about an hour, but I thought I may as well stick it out and hang around to see if I could see anything. I bought a Trolley Tours ticket (student discount again - yay!) so I could hop on and off the little trolley bus during the day. Wanted to save my legs seeing as I'd walked them off yesterday and my poor little feet didn't want to do that much walking today! The lady at the desk said that the fog was typical mountain weather too, and it could blow over in half an hour or stay around all day! So, I thought I'd just take my chances and see what happened, especially as this was the only day I had left to come and I had come all that way so it would be a bit daft to just turn straight round.
Unfortunately, the fog did hang around all day so most of my pictures are of shadowy trees and then a white background!! Now, why didn't I think of packing an industrial sized fog lamp? Silly me! I heard a group of ladies laughing about the fog, and that they should have brought their Dyson vacuum cleaners to suck away all the fog!! Dang it, I was going to pack mine too but chucked it out at the last minute! Lessons to be learnt for next time, eh? ;D
So, that was a bit of a bust really. It also got pretty cold and started raining (I seem to have experienced quite a lot of extreme-ish weather on my holiday so far - heatwaves in Melbourne, bush fires in Melbourne, flooding in Coffs Harbour) so I ended up heading back to Central Sydney after about 5 hours there or so. The trolley bus also stopped running at about 4:30pm too, so I didn't want to get stranded in the Blue Mountains in the fog, rain, and cold! It wouldn't have been too bad if I'd had a walking map, but I couldn't even find one of those in the visitor place, so I thought it best to stick to the public transport (and my feet thanked me). Wandering around somewhere in thick fog without a clue where you're going and on your own probably not the best idea. Trains back to Central Sydney were also one every hour and stopped at 7:25pm too, so I definitely didn't want to miss mine!
I did get to see some nice cascades and waterfalls on one of the stops though, so I guess the day wasn't completely whited-out! They were very pretty and below the fog, so you could actually see them, yay! There weren't that many people around either, so I got to get some nice photos without people's heads or whatever in the way. As I was leaving, a whole troup of people came down, so I obviously got there just at the right time!
Had a nice walk around Circular Quay when I got off the train, as it's quite nice to see the harbour in the evening. I thought that I might check out what was on at the cinema there too, but there was nothing that I fancied so I just had a nice walk instead.
Feel a bit sad about leaving Sydney as I feel like I've been here ages, though it'll only have been just over a week by the time I leave on Monday. It's such a nice city, so I hope to come back one day and check it out a bit more. If anyone knows of a nice single millionaire that they don't want themselves, then give them my number!!
