Got really frustrated this morning trying to buy a train ticket as I couldn't find a machine with instructions in English, and then when I found one, I had to have some kind of travel card thing (like our Oyster card)!! Made my way to the travel centre, but the lady I got couldn't speak English! I wanted to buy a day pass so I could just go around on the train, but I couldn't really explain that in mime to her!!
I went to a different part of the station and finally found a machine that was in English and would just let me buy a ticket. There was an information video on the plane yesterday that said that if you didn't know the fare of where you were going, then you should just buy the cheapest ticket and then you can adjust the fare when you get to our destination. So, I thought I'd do this and then go to one of the bigger stations to buy a travel pass.
I ended up going to Tokyo station, and found an information booth where the girl spoke English - yay! She also gave me a handy booklet with Tokyo highlights for visitors, and also a bit of information about things.
Finally got on my way after buying my day pass and decided to go to the Imperial Palace East Garden which was really pretty. Didn't get too far into the gardens when this guy from Singapore accosted me!! He just came up to me and started speaking in either Japanese or some other language that I couldn't understand and then spoke to me in English - must have seen my confused face! He then went on to say that he was by himself too, and was visiting Japan for a few days. He looked like he wanted to go around the gardens with me, but I managed to lose him whilst going off to look at one of the guard houses. I know that sounds a bit harsh, to just ditch someone, but he was a bit strange and so I didn't really want some limpet guy following me around when I just wanted to have a wander!
Went to a place called Kagurazaka afterwards as my guidebook said that this place was a formerly vibrant geisha quarter. I wanted to see some ladies in kimono's!! Saw a few, but apprarently this quarter is now much like any other and has lots of nice shops and eateries. I did have a wander round some of the quieter alleys though, which was apparently a bit more like how it used to be. If I had the space in my suitcase, I would dearly love to buy a proper kimono and some of the wooden sandals.
There was also a very pretty red temple - the Bishamonten temple - that I walked past. A funny Japanese man waited whilst I took a photo and then exclaimed loudly after I showed him! How strange!
Had been walking around most of the day, so I headed back to the hotel for a rest. I was feeling pretty tired after the day, and so I had good intentions of going out in the evening somewhere for a walk, but I just didn't have the energy! I thought I may as well save myself for walking around all day tomorrow as well.
Tomorrow is also a holiday in Tokyo - Constitution day - whatever that means, so I don't know if things are going to be open or trains running not as often and that sort of thing. The trains here are meant to be really reliable and run very often (they even have LED boards up that show you the time of the next train, and some stations have signs that light up when the next train is approaching!) so I'm not really that worried. I'm also on holiday - I shouldn't need to rush anywhere!
I was planning on going to Osaka and other cities in Japan, but the bank wouldn't give me that much money and so I've only got about 30,000 Japanese Yen to last me for the 6 days that I'm here. I need to feed myself and get around obviously, so I'm kind of staying put in Tokyo for the time I'm here. However, there are plenty of temples and shrines and stuff to do here, that it's probably a good idea that I'm sticking in Tokyo. I think I've had enough of rushing around and trying to see everything, though it is a little bit of a shame that I can't go elsewhere.
The weather seems to be pretty good for the next few days too, so I'm happy just walking around Tokyo and soaking up the Japanese atmosphere. Everything is so different so it's quite nice just to wander around and look at everything!
