We had arranged to meet up with Sam and Jo who we met on the night train in Vietnam. They live in Dunedin and kindly offered to put us up while we were visiting. When we arrived in Dunedin after our long journey we arranged to meet up with Jo's son Jesse. We went to his flat first to meet him and also to look at the car he had for sale. It was a 1990 Honda Prelude and he was selling it for a good price so we took it for a bit of a spin and decided that we would take it! So we now have our first car and so far it's running great! The first night we were there Jo and Sam made us a great dinner and had a big bed ready for us which even had electric blankets! It was great to have some home comforts for a few days and we had the best meals we've had in a long time! Me and Ady decided to repay the nice meals one night and cooked a spag bol which turned out okay even though it took us about 2 hours!
We had a good few days to chill out a bit in Dunedin and enjoy being in one place for a while. We also took some time to plan the rest of our New Zealand trip which Jo and Sam helped us out with. Sam took us both on a little scenic tour of Dunedin where we visited the steepest Street in the world (Baldwin Street) and the highest point in Dunedin to take in the views. We visited the Natural Wonders animal sanctuary on our second day. It's on the peninsula in Dunedin and situated on a farm area. We had to wear a big green waterproof coat which was BIG on me and go on a big quad to get around the area! We stopped at a seal area where we got to see hundreds of seals really close with their pups, then we got back on the quad and went to a penguin area but unfortunately we didn't get to see any this time as sometimes they go hunting in the nearby waters. Then it was back on the quad going around the farm and basically getting covered in mud!
We went to the famous Speight's brewery while we were in Dunedin. Speight's is the local beer for the south island. We had a tour of the brewery which was interesting but the best bit was the free beer tasting at the end! That night we all went for a meal and sampled the local specialality - blue cod and chips, which was delicious!
We spent 5 days in Dunedin and it was great to have some good food, company and time to take a breather. On the way out of Dunedin we visited my Granddads best friend Richard and his wife Yvonne. They cooked us a great dinner of Pumpkin soup and toast and we got chance to get to know them both a bit more and take away lots of big hugs!
