The ferry over from Picton to Wellington was 3 and a half hours and a pretty rough ride. It was windy and rainy for a start so we knew it wasn't going to be great and it was a shame really as the scenery is supposed to be amazing! When we got to Wellington harbour it was only a short ride to the YHA Wellington and the Hostel was just like a hotel and really nice. We shared a dorm room with Darren and Kirstie which had its own bathroom which was nice! We discovered that Wellington is a great city and pretty laid back with some great vintage clothes shops and some bizarre bars!
Me and Kirstie spent the first day looking for a hairdressers while taking a look at the shops too, while the boys went to find a gym and do a bit of shopping. I found a hairdressers that said they would cut my hair for free if I be a hair model for them which is what I did although the hairdresser did get a bit scissor happy!
The first night we decided as it was a Friday we would go for a few drinks. We got told to go to a bar called Mighty Mighty which has live bands on which turned out to be a bit of a strange place. First they had 50's and 60's songs on and then a rock band, but the people there were just so funny to watch. One guy was on the dance floor all night but still doing 60's style dancing to the rock band! Another guy got up and was dancing just like Tom Cruise in Cocktail all night and all the girls were dressed like they were from the 60's! It was great people watching though and we stayed most of the night!
The next day we visited Te Papa museum which is the museum of New Zealand. The building is massive and really modern. Inside there were lots of great exhibitions and interesting information about the Maori people and New Zealand itself. Afterwards the weather improved for a bit so we went for a stroll around the waterfront which is lovely and reminded us of America as everyone was on rollerblades and skateboards! That night we went to catch up on the movie scene and watched a film called taken which was rated a 16 and I got asked for I.D at the counter it was so humiliating, although she did say she has to ask everyone that looked under 25!
On the Monday we left to go to a town called Napier. Napier was about a four and a half hour drive away which felt like longer!
Napier is a very interesting town as it is one of the best examples of Art Deco Architecture in the world. In 1931 Napier was destroyed by a massive earthquake so when it came to rebuilding the town some architecture's decided to rebuild it art deco style.
When we got there it was early evening so we went straight to an YHA Hostel which was on the main road. We shared a dorm with Kirstie and Darren which was good but the hostel was a very old building and a bit scary, especially when we had a power cut that night just as we were going to bed!
The next day I had our day all planned out with a walking tour map of Napier with all the buildings I wanted to see much to the delight of Ady! When we got up it was a really nice day so we ended up playing some mini golf of the sea front first which was really funny and Ady won so he was really happy especially as he is now 1 up on me! As we were finishing the heavens opened and the rain set in for the day. I still insisted we do my buildings walking tour so we all set out on that. The town is actually really small so it didn't take us much time at all and the building really were great, it was like going back in time! We talked the theatre box office lady into giving us a little tour of the art deco theatre than ended up sitting in an old fire station which is now an art deco info centre, watching a video with tea and biscuits! The next day we left for Taupo.
