Can Tho is the biggest city in the Mekong, 4th biggest in Vietnam, with a population of 1.2 million. It still has its charms, though. It is bustling with various markets, eateries and coffee shops. There is a promenade area at the waterfront. In Chau Doc also, the prom attracts the community first thing in the morning and in the evening for a circuit. People gather to exercise, to stroll and do dance and workout classes. Rather than take another boat trip, we took the roll-on-roll-off ferry to the other side of the river and had a wander around. We said hello to everyone we passed, there were a few quiet eateries and fruit and veg stalls. We also noticed that at break time, opposite a school, the kids gather round a sweet shop. Not only does the shop sell sweets, but it has a roulette wheel and the junior school kids gamble their dinner money away. We stopped at a coffee place for iced coffee to the amusement of the locals. We have tried a few of these places now. I am practicing my Vietnamese phrases "Ca Phe Su'a Nong/Da" Hot/Iced coffee with milk. For hot coffee, they serve you half a cup of coffee with condensed milk. It tastes amazing - condensed milk in your coffee is the future! You also get a teapot with your drink. We topped up the small measure with the contents of the teapot. It tasted delicious. We have, however, since discovered that you are supposed to have the contents of the teapot afterwards as it's tea .... you live and learn! The Mekong has been great, lovely friendly people and a real sense that you are somewhere strange, weird and wonderful.
