We got a bit behind with the blog so this is going to be a long one!!!!
We have been in Malaysia now for over a week, where to start...........
Arrived in Penang thurs night to flooded roads, great, thought we were going to have to get out of taxi and walk at one point as it was struggling! We pulled up in the dark to our home for the next 3 nights, the haunted house! Weirdiest place we have stayed at yet, no one came in and no one came out, no one else at breakfast no matter what time we got up and eerie music playing in the background (anyone who has seen 'house of wax' will be able to picture the scene!!)room had unexplainable noises and a funny smell and the woman on the desk who did'nt exactly take a shine to us kept appearing from nowhere! needless to say we did'nt get much sleep!!
In the light of day when things looked a little better, we took a trip out to little india.....big mistake bangles galore so colourful and cheap we were like magpies!!!! After being in the middle of little india most of the day we were craving an indian. Probably one of the best meals yet, ate off banana leaves instead of plates, how funny is that!
Penang hill was next on the list of things to do. You have to get on the fennicular train that climbs up the hill at snails pace to get to the top, you would'nt want to be in a rush its takes half an hour and you have to stand up. At the top took a nosy round and decided to get some henna tattoos done. After the hill we went to the snake temple, their was a man who had a snake on stage attempting to charm it as the normal snake charmer was off ill, as you can imagine the audience was a bit on edge!
Onto Kuala Lumpur which took us a 6 hour bus journey. To be honest if the bus had managed to leave on time and everyone did'nt keep messing about changing seats and taking ages on toilet breaks we would have been there much sooner! Amy thought she would like to sit on her own and have a window seat so she could have a nice peacful nap and listen to her ipod, no chance. The fella who decided to sit next to her (even though there were other empty seats!) took a bit of a shine to her, every opportunity he kept trying to talk to her and she just kept putting her earplugs back in hoping he would get the message, obviously not as he then whipped out a business card telling her if she wanted to work over here she should give him a ring ha ha! KL is like any other city, our hostel was lovely even though we slept in a shed (see pics) Went to see the twin towers on mon, the second tallest buildings in the world. Unfortunalty could'nt go up as it is closed on mondays, typical! Did go inside though to have a look around the shopping centre and what did we find......TOPSHOP!!!!! Could'nt afford anything though so we just looked and dreamed.
Visited the national mosque, KL central train station and central market. All the usual touristy stuff. Weds we went to the big wheel, its like the one in manchester, not like the london eye. Biggest portable wheel in the world, 2.50(pounds) to go on and you get to go round 6 TIMES!! Now thats value for money!
Yesterday caught a bus down to Melaka. Rooms were hard to find so for the first night we ended up in Tony's guesthouse. Imagine a hippy on drugs who likes painting and poetry and you'll be able to imagine Tony. The rooms reflect this with random sayings and painting on the walls. We even had a nice poem/ song left on our wall by someone obviously feeling inspired by their stay here. Had a look around St Paul's hill which is surrounded by all the museums. On the top of the hill is the remains of an old dutch church. As soon as I (Sarah) turned the corner to go in, a gravestone with the name 'Hendrick' jumps out at me, creepy! If you are one of the Hendricks reading this you'll know how rare it is to see the name on something actually spelt the same!!
Today we moved homes from Tony's to another hostel as we already had it booked. We are now sharing a double bed as they tried to charge us extra for a matress on the floor that would'nt even fit in the room properly so that should be fun tonight but at least we have air-con again, yey! Just been out to the beauty museum to take a look at the weird things people in different cultures do to acheive what they perceive to be beautiful. Things like scarring the skin on purpose, putting in mouth plates and making their earlobs massive, ouch!
Chow for now!
