Hola,
We got over the border two days ago after staying for two nights at the Brazillian side of the falls (Foz do Iguacu). From Rio we got the 23 hour long bus which was a bit of an adventure in itself as we were only allowed three twenty minute breaks off the coach. You really start to see things differently after you´ve been in the same seat for almost a whole day! Unfortunatley for Alex we have just discovered that she is in fact allergic to mosquito bites, which is quite unfortunate as we are visiting some of the most tropical places in the world!!! On the coach trip Alex was biten in the night woke up to find she had a foot the size of an elephant´s and a horrible red and yellowish colouring to her foot.
We checked in to a really nice guest house and decided to not go the Brazillian side of the falls as we had heard that the Argentinian side is a lot better and Alex had doctor´s orders to keep out of the sun, no walking on her foot and to drink no alcohol (Alex had three great days as you can imagine). After Tom's fumbled attempts at getting the right medication for Alex´s foot failed, the owner of our hostel owner insisted on drining her to the pharmacist and got the right prescription!! The swelling has only now nearly gone after 6 days and her lovely red rash still scars her. Of course now she is a complete girl and freaks out everytime she see´s a mossie, spraying insect repellent like there´s no tomorrow.
On 8 November we got a bus over the border and arrived in a very laid back, very cheap Puerto Iguazu looking forward to some awesome weather and to visiting the famous Iguazu falls.
The Thursday was a gorgeous day, and of which we could fully enjoy by the pool at our hostel. However as the evening progressed the biggest storm I have ever witnessed, began to stir! It started with a freak flash windstorm together with hours of a an electrical storm right above our heads. Just after we got back from the bar the heavens opened and a true tropical storm of thunder, lightening and the heaviest rain, beated down on top of us!! I couldn´t sleep at all but of course Tom didn´t hear a thing in the night! The following morning with the streets covered in debris. We headed of the the Iguaza Falls armed with many layers, practical shoes and raincoats because of course it was still raining! On arrival of the falls we were already soaked and so didn´t care that we were about´s to spend the day drenched by the falls. WOW - the falls were increadible and so so powerful. With a slightly more open minded health and safety regime in Argentina, you could actually get right next to the fall so as to nearly touch them, or would be suspended over the top of the drop via a network of platforms and catwalks mapped over the whole area. Unfortunatley my foot and ankle now swelled up even more in revenge for my many miles of waterfall climbing and I could hardly walk by lunchtime. So we didn´t do the boat trip that takes you right to the cascade of the falls to get even more wet (which at that time didn´t seem possible)! I think it was even better that ite and was soaking that day and that we looked like complete prats! Highly recommended to anyone in the area.
Tom also had a quite an amusing episode in a shop. He was looking for a vest because the clothes are so cheap here. We went into a shop that had some out and asked the shop assistant how much? He says 30 pesos, we say are you open tomorrow? He says yes and we leave. We then realise that that is only about 5 quid so go back in to try one on. The shop assistant doesn´t bat an eylid when Tom picks up a large and an extra large and goes to the changing room. They look quite tight which is odd cos he ain´t that fat!! We leave that shop without buying one and say bye to the shop assistant. It´s not until we get a little way down the street that we realise it was a womens shop! We always knew Tom liked a bit of cross dressing. Strange thing is, the shop assistant thought nothing of it.
And so now we will be moving onto Buenos Aires tomorrow with a 16 hour coach trip (hopefully better than the last one) to spend a week in the great capital. Hopefully their internet cafes will be slightly more modern and we can put up the rest of our photos and videos!
Love Tom and Alex xxx
