Another day, another attempt at flying to Milford Sound cancelled. This time we were due to fly at 10am, so we had to be up and ready before 9. We re-booked for 2:30 the same day, but were told that it was likely to be cancelled.
As we were half-expecting this, we went to our plan B and drove to the nearby former mining town of Arrowtown. The gold that was originally found in the Arrow river dried up long ago, but left behind is a pretty Victorian village with the long-abandoned Chinese settlement at the far end.
Another short drive later and we arrived at the Gibbston Valley Winery for the noon wine cave tour. We were told lots about the grapes and fermentation process and Julie got to try a few of the locally produced wines while Dean fought the gag reflex brought on by the smell and tipped his away.
On the way back, we passed the airport, so called in to see if our 2:30 flight was going ahead or not. After 30 tense minutes, we were told no and rebooked for 10am tomorrow. The forecast for tomorrow is good, so, fingers crossed, we should be able to go on our last scheduled day in Queenstown.
We went back into town and lay in the sun at a lovely park by the lakeside. Julie made the most of the last rays of sunlight by running a few laps round a local rugby pitch, while Dean supervised. Then it was back to the room and the spa tub, and an early night to prepare for tomorrow's early start.
