Fethiye, Kayakoy, Oludeniz - 1 May
Day 33
We arrived in Fethiye and went to a cafe serving 1.5 meter long pides! We didnt realise thiss when ordering so glad it was a day that Susie and I decided to share a meal!
After lunch we got a dolmus to the Makri Hotel in Kayakoy.
There wasn't a lot in Kayakoy but that afternoon we went for a wander around a ghost town. A village left abandoned after the population exchange in about 1920, where Turkish Catholics were forced to leave to Greece and the same happened with Greek Muslims forced to go to Turkey - approx 2 million people from each country! (The book 'Birds without wings' tells this tale).
We also saw some Lycian tombs which are thousands of years BC. And form part of the the Lycian way - a walk which can be done over several days ...
For dinner we headed back to Fethiye and went to a restaurant on the edge of the fish market where you could pick your own fish and they'd cook it for a fee. The restaurant was a lot nicer than the market in Borneo where you do the same, but once again the fish was super fresh and no glassy eyes.
We also had prawns in the most delicious garlic sauce I've ever tasted, and fresh calamari.
We waited a long time for the mains but we really enjoyed them when they arrived.
A super quick look at the market after then home to bed.
Day 34
After breakfast we left to do the hike to Oludeniz (no Susie of course).
Unfortunately our guide had us walk in the wrong direction for an hour then had to return to the start!
By this point him always being late and incompetent was really starting to get to me!
I learnt later this is his first trip alone and I guess he's also not used to our accents thus why he doesn't understand us either!
Once we were on the right path to Oludeniz it was wonderful.
A walk up the hill through the ruins where we needed to take a few breaks to catch our breath and cool down.
We then walked along a flatter section that came out to beautiful views of the coast dotted with little coves of green water.
We also spotted a tortoise going for a wander up the hill - to do what I have no idea.
After a bit it was downhill again, with many slippery rocks for those not wearing hiking boots (glad to see my spending a fortune at kathmandu pre south America paid off as the hiking boots / zip off pants are still going well!).
The end of the walk had us heading along a road til we reached the main beach (and found Susie and the older ladies (the lesbians!) who did not hike there).
Officially the walk only took us 2 hours total with breaks and people with all levels of fitness.
We had lunch on the roof of a cafe over looking the beach (the beaches not as nice as ours and were sand and pebbles).
We watched the parasailers come in (super dodgy some of them hitting things on the way down!), and enjoyed a cider.
We had a swim next then left later that afternoon getting a cab back to Kayakoy - so thankful to have our first relaxing day in a long time!
That evening we had dinner at our hotel. The owner was a butcher and we had a delicious meal with fresh lamb chops - mmmm! No chance I could be a vegetarian soon!
Our tour leader had a little suprise for us - he'd bought a huge delicious chocolate cake to say sorry for getting us lost!
Day 35
After breakfast we took another dolmus back to Fethiye then onto Kas.
