He says: With the Olympic Games currently going on in London, it was perfect timing for us to visit the site where it all started - Olympia, Greece. Shauna had organized a tour guide for us through Trip Advisor before we left Canada. His name was Andrew, and we met him at 8:30 a.m. at the port. He talked a lot about olive trees and olive oil. I told him it was good to use as tanning oil. He believed me. He even gave us a bottle of his homemade olive oil at the end of the day that he stored in his trunk.
We also had two other travelers accompanying us for the day, two retirees from Australia. When we saw Andrew's car, a standard sedan, we realized someone would be riding in the middle seat. That someone was me.
Our first stop was the site where the Olympic games were started - Olympia. Dating back to 500 B.C., the site was remarkably well preserved. Shauna had downloaded a Rick Steeves book on the site, so she played tour guide for me as we explored the ruins. It was cool to learn how the games originated, and the different rules that were in place (i.e. only men competed, everyone competed naked, olive oil was used during training, etc.). It was amazing to think about how the games have evolved from their origins to the massive undertaking they are today. We visited the original "stadium" which contained the marble starting blocks that were used in the old games, and are still preserved today.
Our next stop was a family winery. According to Rick Steeves, Greek wine is notoriously terrible. However, I think Rick may need to clean his palette, because the wine we tasted was great. The family who ran the winery was very nice and extremely hospitable, feeding us "grandpa's" fresh tomatoes with cheese, bread, and you guessed it - olive oil. At 7 Euro for a bottle of white wine, this was a little paradise.
Feeling very inebriated due to the 40 degree heat, and grandpa's tomatoes, we then hit a local bakery for some sweets. They had a freezer full of fresh chocolate covered ice cream treats, so I went a little nuts. We scored ice cream treats, baklava, and a massive amount of fresh cookies, all for five Euros. I felt like we had robbed the joint.
Next, we stopped a local beach club for some fun in the sun. The only problem was, not knowing we were going to have a chance to swim, neither of us wore our bathing suits. I was tempted to take off my clothes, lather up in olive oil and pretend I was "training" for the Olympics at the beach, but I refrained.
So far, Greece is great - as is the olive oil.
