Shaun on the Road
Alright, due to popular demand, here is another postcard. In honour of my recent trips to Thailand and Cambodia, I am entitling this one, Dude, where's my tuk-tuk? That one isn't my line, but I thought it was pretty good.
I flew out of Hanoi on the 20th of July back down to Bangkok. I was a little nervous flying Vietnam Airlines, but everything was alright. Apparently they have retired all of their soviet made aircraft, which is always good news. Got into Bangkok and spent only a night there, which was fine by me. I have been there three separate times now, and the novelty wears off rather quickly. How many burned CD's and Jokley sunglasses can one man possibly purchase?
From Bangkok I went south to the Island of Phuket (pronounced Poo-ket). The town site was nothing to call home about. Extremely touristy and rather packed with people. Hundreds of bars and way, way too many girly boys, but what can you do? I hung out at the beach for a day and rented a motor bike. The weather was not fantastic, but passable. I was able to reduce my farmer tan, so that is always a plus.
I signed up for an overnight scuba dive trip, so on Saturday morning I headed out to a boat that is anchored in a bay about an hour and a half from Phuket. It was a lot of fun. I got in seven dives, including one night dive. Some highlights were: a two meter long leopard shark, and reasonably big turtle, a 20 meter wreck, helping my dive master remove the hook from a fishes mouth, and seeing some huge eels. Lots of fun.
Spent the following night in Phuket and then took a series of buses to KL, where I am now. It was a long day yesterday. I left my hotel at 7am and only got into the city at 4 this morning. I met some people on the bus and we split a guest house room for the remainder of the night.
I'll only spend a day here in KL and tomorrow head out to the east coast of Malaysia for a few days. From there it is off to Singapore and then Australia.
FYI, I fly into Calgary on August 31st at 11:15 at night, so for all of you who wanted to know, now you know. This is if everything else remains the same, there is nothing for sure in this life. Take care all and keep up with the e mails, I do appreciate them.
