Well we survived Christchurch; we didn't feel any earthquakes while we were there. We left Christchurch and headed south and stayed in Omaora. There was a yellow eyed penguin colony on a nearby beach so we went there for 6:30pm as advised and waited but only 4 penguins turned up at the other end of the beach to the lookout, so all we saw was these little black things waddling in the distance.
On Friday 20th we headed in land to Lake Takepo. The drive to the lake was good with snow-capped mountains in the distance. When we got to the lake it was a deep turquoise colour. We did a 3 hour walk around some of the lake and up Mt John to Canterbury University Observatory.
We drove to the foot of Mt Cook and walled to the Hooker glazier. The walk took about an hour and we had a crystal clear view of Mt Cook as the weather was great. When we got to the glazier it was a bit disappointing as it looked just like a really dirty iceberg. Will be leaving tomorrow and heading south towards Dunedin. Weather still hot and sunny.
