Well that's the holiday over and now flying back to the uk, It's been a fantastic trip to a wonderful country.
Sorry about the lack of updates over the past 2 days but been quite busy.
Wednesday
We decided that this would be the day for visiting the blue lagoon near Keflavik so headed out reasonably early after having a spot of breakfast which involved boiling out breakfast eggs in the hot spring in the hotel car park. This consisted of us putting out eggs into a string pouch at the end of some string attached to a cane and then lowering them into a steaming pit for the allotted time, 9 minutes soft boiled and 12 minutes for hard boiled. First attempt and the eggs were gorgeous well worth sitting out in the Icelandic wind and breathing in sulphur steam.
After the driving experience over the plateau we opted for a coastal route to the blue lagoon which was longer but at least the were no snow storms although the wind was still there. Again the landscape was unbelievable and so different to what we had seen. It consisted of the road cut through what resembled hundreds of black termite mounds but clearly formed of lava rock and covered in a green moss. All set against a backdrop of mountains on one side and the sea in the other.
We reached the blue lagoon and parked up in an empty at park apart from 3 coach tours. The weather was cold and raining and didn't quite know what to expect inside. We purchased the comfort package so we got the use of the towels and robes and a free drink and lava face mask at the swim up pool. After getting changed we ventured outside and de-robed, It was bloody freezing so we made a bee line for the steps into the lagoon. Oh my god it was heaven at a temperature of 38-40°. We had a mooch about and found the hot waterfall and the steam room then made our way to the bar for our drink after applying the mud mask which was in tubs around the lagoon for you to apply. We were in the lagoon about 2 1/2 hours and experienced three weather types before deciding to move on although after that we didn't feel like moving anywhere.
The next stop today was going to be pingvellier national park roughly a 2 hour drive north wards past Reykjavik. Again the landscape changed to the built up City then out and over the snow covered mountains over ice covered sections of road where the locals didn't seem to care and would overtake regardless, but then when you've got wheels like a monster truck I guess you're not bothered.
We arrived quite late on but had time to have a stroll down the cutting flanked either side by rock faces that look like they could decide to drop at any time and looked like a half finished game of Jenga and around the frozen streams that all made up an old Viking market place a what appeared to be a kind of parliament whet laws were passed and made. We made it back to the top just in time to grab a quick coffee before the visitor centre closed before getting back in the car and heading back towards the hotel for some tea. This consisted tonight of the traditional Icelandic dish of domino pizza and wedges. Another day done.
