15th - 16th MayYeppoon (incl. A day trip to Keppel island)Started off todays trip bright and early as usual, with a morning detour east along Eungella drive. This hour and a half drive eventually led to a steep climb up a rainforest covered mountain where there were scenic views and Platapusses / Platapai in the water.(We could decide which was the correct plural of Platapuss, so we just ended up calling them Platacats!) We arrive at the wrong time though as they tend to only appear at dawn or dusk, but after staring into a pond for 30mins we eventually saw one! Thank God! After driving for an hour and a half to see one, we weren't leaving until we saw some platacats!!!We came back to Mackey from Eungella Drive for lunch and then set of for a horrid 5 hour drive (at least!) down to Yeppoon (Ahem!).Thankfully the endless Sugar Cane plantations had gone and Koala territory began.Woohoo! It was almost night as we arrived but the scenery was breathtaking. It was like a quiet, un-touristy version of the Thai coastline and the Caravan site was posh too!The following morning we set off the Keppel island from Yeppon. The Lonely Planet guide recommended it highly as equal to that of the famous Whitsunday islands, but as we missed those, we thought we'd definitely take a trip to Keppel. There were less than 10 of us on the ferry crossing and upon arrival Sarah and I knew that we'd struggle to leave! It was the most beautiful tropical island, practically deserted and out of season. The beaches were white and clean. The wildlife was plentiful and and the remoteness of it all was unbelievable! We ended up finding this really private beach that was surrounded by mountains after a trek through the forrest. There was some coral further out to sea, so pretty much all we did that day was sun-soak, walk and snorkel! There was even a little tiny pizza place tucked away in the middle of nowhere for lunch. It was surreal!I would recommend Keppel to everybody before the tourists arrive and make it as crowded as the Whitsundays.I know people pay thousands for private luxurious island like this, but all it cost us was $20 ferry crossing! I think I'll stop raving on about this island now as I'm temped just to walk back there!
