For those of you who are teachers, how does the first day normally go? Well the status in G1 (my classroom) is that there are no maps on the walls (we don't have any); I don't have access to the school email yet and only gained access to the school system last night.I have no class lists, no knowledge of any special needs (although English as a second language would be a good guess) and Year 12 have not made their IB (International Baccalaureate) decisions, so I may or may not be teaching them. The thing is not to panic.I am not the only one and it seems to be the norm, we won't actually know which students we have until they turn up this morning, it is common to lose a few over the holiday.
The resources are carefully guarded by Khun Sue, who appears to be very nice. She controls everything, even Geography workbooks and stationary.Want paper and pens you have to sign it out with Sue. Only problem with this is that I am going to have to be more organised.
Due to the possibility of Year 12, I don't have a tutor group; this is an attempt to balance my timetable. We'll see, registration is only 10 minutes and not having a tutor group makes me homeless as someone else has my classroom.
So the day started with a whole secondary school assembly, I was surprised at how many kids secondary had.I used to get more kids in a year assembly at AHS (180 in the year)!Seriously there are only 12 kids in Year 12 and I think about 50 in Year 7.We were all introduced and then the tutor groups disappeared for the chaos that is organising the year - planners, timetables, homework and books (every student gets a pack with all their exercise books and folders). I wasn't involved and homeless so hunted for an empty room to finally do some lesson planning. Set myself up for the day (managed to have no lessons today), the only interruption I had was a 10 minute speech to Year 12 to see if I could get any of them to take Geography (or not), can't have been too bad, out of 12 I got 2.Yes I will have a class of only 2, not sure what to do with them.
Day 1 done.
