So, we finally made it to Switzerland - the land of chocolate! First stop was at Luzern where we wandered through the streets. We checked out two of the major bridges - they were both quite amazing with beautiful murals painted along the tops of the bridges. One of the bridges was badly burned by fire, so it was quite amazing to see the new panels juxtaposed with the burned and charred ones.
Our first impression of Switzerland was… OMG, IT IS SO EXPENSIVE HERE!!! I think mainly because the Franc is so close to the Australian dollar, and the prices are so close to those with the countries with Euro. It's quite strange seeing the price of a burger in MacDonald's as 15 Franc… Hahaha. Needless to say we ended up missing lunch that day - paying 25 Franc for something that we didn't really want wasn't too appealing.
We jumped onto the first train to Zurich and made it to the Hotel Otter. Each of the rooms here is themed, and we got the African Room. The room is REALLY big, and with a comfy bed, nice CLEAN shower and EVEN A BATH!!! Hahaha, life of luxury! We headed to the supermarket for a cheap dinner and chilled out watching the only channel in English - MTV! Hahaha
Today we got up early for a walk through the streets of Zurich. Heading through the main streets of Zurich we walked through a gorgeous park as the sun came through the overcast sky. Loads of swans and ducks paddled their way through the lake in between the moored boats. So stunning. Our next stop was for some famous Luxemburgli… now, these are a delicacy of Switzerland and kind of look like a mini yo-yo biscuit, except the centre is a really rich cream, and the outside is like a mix of meringue, sugar and mousse… I obviously can't explain it so well - best to come and try it for yourself. Nick and I shared the smallest box (which came with 14 OF THEM!!!!) and then prompty felt really sick… Hahaha
Our wanders then took us to the two major churches in Zurich - the first famous for it's stained glass windows (which almost looked painted - so unusual and beautiful!) and then to the largest clock face in Europe where we saw a bride entering the church for her wedding. From there we kept wandering through the sun soaked streets to make our way to the best chocolate drink in Zurich which was AMAZING but SOOOO RICH!!!! Before waddling back to the hotel!
Tomorrow we make our way to Munich and off to Oktoberfest!! Really excited to get to Germany again - can't believe we're so close to being back home again… it's going really quickly now! Every day I think about how lucky I am to have been able to do this and to see all the places I've seen so far.
Missing you all heaps, but will be seeing all you Melbourne crew soon at the party Cat's organized for Oct 3rd!
