Salt flat tour
As you no we missed our bus which meant we got in around midnight found a decent hostel and hit the hay.
We started the day not knowing where the tour office was, we got some bad ass gloves from the market to keep warm in the desert come night time and tried to find it. The place was only small but for some reason we really couldn't find it so we had to get a taxi. I wish we never the taxi driver was such a Mong he didn't have a clue, we stopped to ask a guy who knew exactly where we was going but still this old div tried to go the wrong we got pissed off bundled out and we were at the red planet office ready to go finally. Threw the stress of not knowing where to go we didn't have time for breakie, we just had enough time to fill up on crisps n biscuits, gross.
The group was around 11 people, two boring French couples one with a s*** David Guetta hair cut, two gay Aussies that tried to pretend they weren't and thee other lads from Aus. We would be travelling g in two jeeps and do to the fact I'm a tall mother f***er I didn't have to go in the back those seats were for the French.
The first stop was the train graveyard about 20 minutes away. There our no more trains in Bolivia because some president back in the 90 sold them all to Brazil for his own gain and the Bolivians hate home his referred to as President gringo. Anyway the train graveyard was sick we got a chance to climb all over them and get some good snaps!
We then visited a salt factory to see the process from the flats into salt you buy from the shops. It was interesting, the people out not that rich but I thought they were lucky to have such a vast natural resource to profit from. Some of the workers build there house out of salt bricks as they are very good insulators. There was just enough time to jump a giant lama made of salt get some spirits and we were off.
Back in the jeep and wewere off to salt hotel for dinner which was good news because I was starving as usual! The salt hotel was cool, it had loads of sculptures made of salt and where we had dinner had fantastic views of the flats. We had beef and farro for dinner with a bad ass apple pie for desert, well find it was time for the salt flats.
We waked up while the guys packed the lunch away, he had a little talk about the size of the salt tour we saw a few people extracting salt then it was time for the pictures. We got split into groups of four and we went first with the two gay Aussies. Oscar our tour guide had skills and we all had a go at being the giant.
Me and Knate had a go first with a vodka bottle that didn't work then with a beer can which was slightly better but our best pics came from using boots an idea we had saw on the bamba website.
Pics done Oscar lined us all up for a video the magical pringle can. We all got a video well my iPhone didn't work but I got one on knates. We all just did stupid dances coming out of the can it was sck. That done the salt flats were over it was a three hour drive through the desert to base. We had an iPod lead in the car but it was f***ed it made tunes sound weird so broken queen songs from the French muppets was the best we could manage.
When we got to the accommodation it was decent we were filled with a ridiculous amount of biscuits and coffee my new thing, boom. We found a beer, had lunch a bad ass chicken meal! We then cracked into our weird sports after half the bottle was gone we soon realised we had been ripped off it wasn't alcoholic, oh well it will do us a favour in the morning. Off to bed at around midnight for a 7.30 wake up call.
f*** knows why we got up early I comfortably got ready and dusted breakie in half an hour! The rest of the group farted about and it was after nine before we left. The first stop was some cool rock formations in the desert that gave us loads of climbing and photo opportunities. rock valley done it was on to the green rock which really doesn't need explaining. There was a massive rock in the distance the Aussies had climbed it so me and Knate had to. We got a picture on my iPhone that weren't all that and one of the gays took one which we never got.
Our first lagoon was waiting it was cool, they had two of the five types of flamingo we would see. We learnt some cool facts like flamingos can control their heart beat to survive in harsh conditions.
By this time I was starving we stopped of for lunch and it did the job. Pasta veg and breaded chicken have me enough energy to combat the baking desert hear.
Next stop was a mission away through the desert, I love blasting round the desert in a jeep it makes me feel like I'm a movie racing to the boarder to get away from the cops.
We got to the rock tree and indeed it was a tree that looked like a rock, by this time the wind had picked up and it was evil. So it properly wasn't the best time for me to s climb a rock the size of a three story house bit I did it anyway.
The red lagoon was up next it was sick. Cause our cameras are so s*** we attempted to get well close to the flamingos to get a snap but they s*** it and flew off so my nature pics were s***. A short drive away and we were at our nights accommodation in the desert.
We had are final dinner which I thought was rank so it was awkward hiding the fact I don't like it because I was sitting next to the safe as f*** tour guide Oscar who had done his best to make the tour unreal.
An early night because we were getting up at 4.30. In the morning I put all the clothes on I had and was still freezing. The morning was unreal we were in the highest desert in the world (5000 meters above sea level) standing next to an active volcano that you could see bubbling away. On the way the jeep was struggling to get up the hill so at crazy altitude me and two gays had to push, it absolutely ruined me. We got to the hot spring still freezing had a pancake breakie and got in the hot spring and watched the sun come up. It was unreal so warm and refreshing Instantly not cold there was no way I was getting out in a rush.
By the time I dragged my self up the sun was up and it was warm. A couple of stops in the desert and we were at the Chilean boarder out epic three day adventure was over. We were sad to being leaving Oscar who was an absolute legend!
