Having spent a restless night in a too-hot room I was awake at 0600 with lots of banging and noise outside the door (yes, even with ear-plugs). The coach we saw in the car park last night was preparing for departure and all the tour passengers' luggage was being ferried from their rooms - all of which seem to be on our floor - to the lift, which is opposite our room.
Trying not to disturb Alex too much, I hopped in the shower sadly missing the quality and size of our previous accommodations. I swear the entire room and bathroom at Glasgow Pond would have fitted neatly into the upstairs bathroom at The Jute Store in Blairgowrie! Still, the room is clean and serves its purpose, there's free parking and breakfast is included in the price - but I'm glad we're only here for 2 nights.
Straight after breakfast we secured everything valuable in the safe before setting off on our walk into Glasgow. We started along the Great Western Road then turned towards Kelvingrove and the park, walking along the riverside for a little way then finally made our way down to the Clyde just near the Tall Ship. We followed the Clyde all the way down to Glasgow Green and The People's Palace where we stopped for morning tea. Sadly the hot chocolate I had was barely lukewarm and half full of foam but, on a positive note, it tasted good.
Soon we were on our way again and this time we turned towards the city and walked through the outskirts and then Merchant City eventually reaching Buchanan Street and then Sauchiehall Street and the pedestrian mall. We trudged up and down the shopping district but nothing was particularly inspiring although Alex did find a necklace in Fossil that she bought.
We lunched at Pizza Express (where else?) and after a short rest while we refuelled it was time to move on again. We had been tracking our walk with RunKeeper on Alex's iPhone, but the battery was now running quite low and we were worried that the phone would die before we reached home and so not measure the true distance. As we were looking good for a couple of personal records we actually sped up over the last couple of kilometres.
At one point as we walked along the Great Wetern Road we were accosted by a man who earnestly informed us that Santander was Spanish owned; this we already knew but it was obviously news to him as he was quite gob-smacked by the revelation and it disturbed him so much that he felt the need to share such alarming information with everyone he passed in the street! I think he honestly felt as if someone had tried to pull the wool over his eyes but I'm sure that Santander's Spanish origins are common knowledge - well, at least they are to most of the population.
On reaching the hotel to end exactly where we started we had walked 18.93 km in 4 hours and 16 minutes. (As we turned off RunKeeper each time we went into a shopping centre we actually walked further than that but it's still a pretty impressive feat. Even more impressive is the fact that I could probably walk it again!)
Time to pack up tonight ready for our next venture south of the border; somewhere we haven't revistited since 2007. First stop, Buxworth in the Peak District.
