Saturday 2nd June Romo
After a few days just sitting and reading at the camp site, relaxing and doing little, we decided that it was time to make a visit. To an island. Actually, we also needed food but it might sound better we turn it into a tourist type activity.
We were promised hot weather, again. Above 30 and clear skies. Again. It is quite strange but so far, we have taken all meals outside, enjoying the sunshine and heat. This is in stark contrast to our Scottish trip where we never sat outside until on our return journey we managed it in Birmingham.
Anyway, drove the 15 miles or so to the island, crossing on a 4-mile-long causeway and meeting what might be described as Danish tacky holiday world. A place at the end of the road where tackiness is on sale, the beach stuff at inflated prices that people buy and then ditch soon after getting home.
The end of the road also meant a camp site, close packed, cluttered full of caravans and awnings, exuding all that bonhomie that was the Butlins and Hi-D-Hi world of the 1950's.
Following the road over a crest we then came face to face with the beach: actually, a massive stretch of sand and in the distance cars and motorhomes parked up looking at water.
It's strange in some ways because the area is a national park, yet it is littered, but rather less than examples at home, eg Dawlsih with the detritus of mass tourism/holiday making. Holiday homes upon homes and the shops to sell the stuff holiday makers think that want. But also, some of the older, original buildings remain. This includes a white-faced church of c.1737 where about 40 UK airman lie, as well as several Germans from the Battle of Jutland on 1916. All very quiet and still in the heat of the afternoon sun.
The island also hosts a ferry service to Sylk, a small island off of Germany which is also a holiday destination. But, at the harbour we found a fish shop with an enormous array of both fresh and smoked fish. So far, the 'supermarkets', actually small shops, have had little in the way of fresh fish or meat so finding this was a bonus.
