The Australian Open is the first Grand Slam of the tennis season. Melbourne Park is a superb venue for this event. The Australian crowds are very reserved but supportive of their favourite players. Melbourne Park is very well organized and can easily handle the crowds that come to watch two weeks of tennis every January. Today we attended the day session at Rod Laver which is the largest of the arenas. The day started with ladies quarter finals and we saw Li Na defeat Radwanaka. The next match pitted two Spaniards, Ferrer and Almargro. Almargro took the first two sets and had match point opportunities in the third, but eventually lost the match in 5 sets. The last match of the day session was Sharapova and Makarova......Sharapova in straight sets. The night session has Djokovich and Berdych playing each other in a quarter final match. Melbourne attracts thousands of people from all over the planet to the Australian Open. The temperate climate, beautiful physical setting, loads of great restaurants combine to make Melbourne a fantastic place to visit. We will attend the day session again tomorrow where Azerenka, Kuznetsova, Williams and Murray try and make it to the semifinals. The evening session Roger Federer plays Tsonga. Lets see how everyone does.
