Saz and Dave's travels
Today we got up really early as we were booked onto the 8am bus to Da Nang. We got a quick breakfast then got on the bus. It was really strange on the bus as there was people's stuff everywhere - books, water, sarongs and we couldn't work out where they had all gone. As the backseat was free we claimed it and spread out. However 5 minutes later we pulled up outside a hotel and all the missing people piled back on - must have been a rest stop or something and they looked pretty pissed off to see us in their seats!
We got to Da Nang a few hours later and were dropped off at a local travel agent. Me and Zac went off in search of a cheap hotel for the night while Dave stayed with the bags, chatting to the local motorbike crew. Zac and I quickly realised how incredibly awful Da Nang is! Not only were the hotels all ridiculously expensive but the one we looked at that was actually recommended in the guidebook smelt of mould and had no windows. When we got back to Dave he had managed to find a guesthouse for 7 dollars a night, the cheapest we had seen so we decided to go for that one.
When we got to the guesthouse we realised you really get what you pay for - we had no sheets, no toilet roll and it looked like it hadn't been cleaned since it was built! After a big rant about the grossness of it all we decided to go for a walk around town. No improvement there! Everywhere we went people just stared and the men it seemed were particularly letchy. All the shops and buildings looked dated and faded of all life. The place just had a depressed feel to it. We walked a long way round in the heat but saw nothing of much interest at all!
To waste a bit of time we decided to visit Danang's only real attraction (unless you include an odd pink church) - the Cham museum. This was actually quite intersesing with loads of terracotta and sandstone figures. However, feeling a bit drained of energy from this place we got motorbikes back to our hotel where we went for a quick sleep before tea. Having a shower proved to be a bit more difficult as the bathroom door had a bit of a dodgy lock and we couldn't get into it. After asking the landlady 3 times for a key which she didn't seem to have, a wierd guy with a cowboy hat, cigarette and various instruments turned up to pick the lock and remove the handle!
We walked along the river in search of somewhere to eat and eventually settled on a place that had a free pool table. The menu here was very odd, for example tortoise, pigs brain, liver and kidney and crispy pig's trotters! We managed to find some normalish food without any entrails that was actually very tasty. Later we played some pool then went back to our room for a game of cards. It was then we realised that our room was full of mosquitos and it was a really good job we had a mosquito net otherwise we would have been bitten alive! We won't be sorry to leave this place tomorrow!
