Saz and Dave's travels
We were up at 6 am this morning as we had to get on the 7 am bus to Mount Isa. As the local buses weren't running at this time we had to get a taxi to the bus station which was expensive enough but even more so than usual due to the fact that we had to turn round when Dave realised he had forgot to hand our room key in at reception!
The bus to Mount Isa took 12 hours which was one hell of a slog especially since we only stopped twice for about half an hour in this time. Each of the stops was at some remote garage cum cafe which they call roadhouses out here. The clientele were slightly strange and the chocolate well past its sell by date - You could tell we had now entered into the outback!
We got into Mount Isa at about 7pm and when we got off the bus got out our guidebook to try and work out how to get to the one and only hostel in town. A local girl who looked remarkably like a man told us the hostel was on the other side of town. When i asked if we could walk she said it was too far and not safe and that we should watch out for the aborigines! Luckily when i rang up the hostel the woman told me her husband was already on his way to pick us and a couple of other people for the bus up.
After our free ride in the mini-bus to the hostel we checked in and then went straight back out again in search of pizza hut as we were starving. The walk to pizza hut was all a bit dodge as we had to pass a very ferocious looking dog behind a very low fence and then walk up a couple of quite dark streets. Pizza hut turned out to be just a take-away so we ordered a large pizza then shared some chips in McDonalds while we waited. We then went and grabbed our pizza, legged it back to the room and scoffed it before going to bed.
