Saz and Dave's travels
We were woken up this morning almost as soon as the sun came up as the tent began to get unbearably hot. Everyone was a little groggy after a pretty uncomfortable nights sleep, but we all had a lovely breakfast which woke us up and gave everyone enough energy to pack the van in preparation for another day on the "road".
Our first stop today was to visit the wreck of the Maheno which used to be a luxury passenger liner which in 1935 was blown ashore by a cyclone on its way to a scrapyard. It is so surreal to see the rusting, barnacle encrusted ship emerging from the ground with fish swimming in the surrounding pools, it's amazing. Another cool sight there was the planes which would land and take off from the beach. At one point a plane was driving straight towards us as it taxied down the beach.
A couple of kilometers up the road we got to see the Pinnacles, which is a huge mulitcoloured sand dune (I think there were over 200 different shades of sand in it!).
After a quick stop for a picture at the Pinnacles, we got back into the van and headed for the northern tip of the Island to a place called Indian Head. Here we got an unbelievable view out to sea and inland, but I don't think we saw any sharks or whales, although to be honest there was probably plenty of stuff out there only too small to see. It was still definitely worth the visit though.
We spent another 40 minutes there having lunch and playing frisbee before continuing the journey by going inland to a spot called Champagne Pools. These were so cool, after a short walk, you get to a rock formation which is like a load of craters at different levels, all filled with water and when the waves crash into the rocks, the surf all crashes into the pools making them fizz and pour water into the pools below. As it is the only safe place on the island to do saltwater swimming, we all had a swim with the fish which must have got stuck in the pools from the sea.
After a swim we all headed off to a nearby campsite which unfortunately we weren't allowed to stay at, but we could use the facilities, so everyone had a shower. It was so nice to have a shower, but not too relaxing as it was $1 for 3 minutes of hot water, after that it was freezing so it was a bit of a rush so you didn't get the blast of freezing water.
At the showers we bumped into group 2 (from our hostel) and decided to look for a camp site. We spent an hour faffing around trying to find a suitable campsite, group 2 wanted a busy campsite where as we couldn't care less and just wanted somewhere to make tea. We eventually found a suitable site after driving up and down the beach a couple of times and having a quick talk with a ranger, who advised us that 5 of Australia's 8 poisonous snakes reside on the island, something we would have liked to have found out after we had been camping as opposed to before.
The camp was much the same as yesterday with no running water, so holes would have to be dug again. The cooking responsibilities were also the same with the girls cooking, but this time Saz took the head chef role and cooked a delicious pasta dish which everyone wolfed down.
After tea, we played some drinking games with the remaining goon which quickly made Jon and Natalie chunder. The rest of us then carried on having a few drinks on the beach until a little later on when me and Saz decided to hit the sack.
