Sri Lanka blog 2
On Monday we went to the trainstation to check the trains to Kandy and we found out that there are only trains going from Colombo and we're not really enthousiastic about that... It would be nice to see a different part of the country, but travelling there will take a day and travelling back as well, so not sure if we're still going.. We found out later that Kandy is not amazing, except for the lake (you can walk around the lake), so for now, we just keep surfing :)
Last Wednesday we saw the most beautiful thunderstorm ever... the lightning was amazing and I managed to take a nice picture of it! We also made some movies.. it was really nice.
On Thursday we went to Galle in the afternoon by bus, which was an interesting experience: I thought Indian traffic was crazy, but that was before I took a bus in Sri Lanka! There is only one road, along the beach, and the busses drive crazy fast - more chance to die in a bus then to die because of a tsunami, although...
The next day, as we were in the internet café, they turned on the radio and said there was a tsunami warning! Seriously!! I did feel the earthquake, but only realised that later. So we left the place, wanted to go back to our guest house (at the beach) but as we were heading that way, all the people were shouting not to go there and to go the other way beacause of the tsunami... and so we did.. we didn't have our pasports or anything, which is a bit stupid, but hey, what are the chances?!
We ended up a little bit land inwards (about 1 km maybe) sitting in the grass somewhere. A very nice man told us we were safe there and later on he came by to give us an update. Then he invited us over and we went with him. His wife gave us a big glass of coconut water and we were looking at CNN for the tsunami news.. After an hour or so, still no tsunami and it looked like it wasn't going to happen after all - luckily. Very weird day... we were really hungry and decided to go eat somewhere as we did. There was a tv in the restaurant as well and after dinner we went home and found the place as we left it.. Very happy to be alive and to still have our surfboards..
The next day we had an after non-tsunami surf, which was really nice! Alon and Roy (the guys from Israel) joined us and they had Puta (their tuktuk driver) filming the surfing. He also filmed a part of one of my waves :) After the surf we all had breakfast together and chilled out. Then we went for a massage (just Lilian and me, because they had to get back at one point because they had friends coming over later that day).
In the evening we saw some little turtles - they burried some turtle eggs here at the guest house and some baby turtles were there already - the next day we would set them free into the ocean.
Òn Friday it was new year (that is the third new year in 4 months for me!) and everything was closed as well as the following days. With everything I mean the internet café ;) The fruit stand was about the only thing that wasn't closed and we were very happy with that.
When the sun was setting we released the baby turtles into the ocean, which was really fun: they actually walk really fast towards the ocean and when they get there, they just start swimming and we can only hope they'll survive.. Normally, the mother is waiting for them closeby and we did see a big turtle from out beach the past couple of days.
We also met a dive master and we decided to go diving that Monday. It would be the first time for Lilian and I brought my little logbook that I got when I did my paddi on the Gili Islands (Indonesia). He borrowed us the book, so I could refresh my memory and I explained some things to Lilian.
In the evening we got a special dinner made by Anusha: rice with coconutmilk - it was a bit salty, but really good. Apparently that's what they eat here with new year: they all start cooking at the same time (7.15 pm this time) and they start eating at the same time as well (10.28 pm) - probably something to do with the moon, because the time changes every year.
Saturday we had another great surf. It was really quiet in the water because of the new year: no locals :) No yoga, since it was Saturday, so we chilled out on the beach most of the time and enjoyed it very much.
On Sunday, Alon joined us for a surf again. After the surf we did some yoga all together and we had our fruity breakfast. After Alon left, we went to town for some lunch ( we were suppose to have lunch at the guest house, but anusha forgot...) and some more fruits: I'm so going to miss those back home....
Well, time flies, about 2 weeks left before going home...
Next week: going for a 7 hour safari in Yale National Park and afterwards we're going to Arugam bay - the surfspot of Sri Lanka.
please leave a message :)
