Bula Venaka everybody!!!!!! Just arrived back in Brisbane after a crazy 2 weeks on the islands of Fiji!!!!!! I don't know where to start!!! We arrived on the mainland late at night and were shown to our rooms, we then proceeded to the bar where we were offered 'Kava'. I was thinking great free champers but i was wrong! Kava is Fiji's local drink and is made from pepper plant roots and strained water and is drunk from a bilo (half a cocunut)! Its Fiji tradition to always accept every Kava offered to you and to clap once shout "Bula" , down the grog and then clap 3 times!!! We managed two then we felt sick! The drink is said to have a narcotic effect , which made sense as the bloke heading the ceremony seemed pretty laid back! After drinking the Kava we headed off to bed with numb mouths and had a few hours kip before heading to outr first of six islands, Beachcomber!
We arrived at the 'Party Island' around ten and were given a welcome drink and showed to our 100 bed dorm! We then headed of to the beach for a spot of sunbathing! That night we tested the frozen cocktails, which were a bit too nice! The next day we headed off on our boat trip, the seaspray! We boarded the boat and headed off to Modriki, which is an uninhabited island and was where castaway was filmed ! WILSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We snorkelled the reef for a while, until i saw a jellyfish, i soon exited the water! We then headed to Yanuwa Island and visited a Traditional Fijian Village! Were we witnessed but didnt take part in another Kava ceremony, we then visited the locals shell market were i got some local pearls. We then boarded the boat again and headed back to Mana before heading back to Beachcomber on the Yasawa Flyer!
The next day we headed up north of the Yasawa Islands to an island called Wayalailai, a small resort which is run and owned by the villagers, therefore it was pretty basic (limited electricity only for a few hours in the evening, no hot water, meals were a bit off) but apart from that the people were really nice, this was also the island that we did reef snorkelling off and managed to see white tip reef sharks! The snorkelling was a bit mad as he took us out to the middle of the blue and then was like jump out follow me! haha! Stranded in the middle of the south pacific with no means of getting back in the boat/ tin can and feeding sharks! No chance!!! We stayed on Wayalailai for 2 nights and on the 1st we decided to have a few drinkies with 2 scotties that we met. On the 2nd night we were going out of our minds as all activities were cancelled due to bad weather! Dinner was again unidentifiable and there seemed to be 1 less dog on the island lol! It was evening and we were proving a nice feast for the mossies another 22 bites on my left arm !!! We trekked out to find the captain and see if he had a tv or something! He took us to the staff quarters where we sat in a tiny room that slept 3 couples and their kids and watched a documentary on the Bermuda triangle together lol, they were fascinated! Me and Jade soon had enough of this and retreated back to our Bure! We decided to give them one of our DVDs that we gained in Bali (Twilight), which they loved!!!!!
The next day we were first on the boat to leave and head to our next Island of Korovou! As soon as we arrived here, I liked it which was good as we got stranded here for an extra night due to the cyclone!!! Our bure was boarded up and we had rubbish weather for the next 3 days and all activities were cancelled again but we caught up on some well earned sleep to say the least and read a million books each! The cyclone passed and the sun came out yay! Next stop after Korovou was Coral view!!!! We had a nice bure and sun loungers on the lawn which was just lovely!!!!
We only had 1 night on Coral View and then headed back down south to Manta Ray resort!!! The resort was really nice and the food was the best we had our whole time in Fiji! The chef worked for the sofitel hotel so the food was lush! We spent our days sunbathing, weaving baskets ang making cocunut bracelets which nearly got me in trouble at the australian border! We left Manta Ray after 1 night and headed to south sea island for 2 nights!
South sea island was the smallest island that we stayed on, you could walk round the whole island in 2 minutes! On our first night there were 13 of us and the 2nd night there were 12 people!! Although in the day there were around 130 day guests so plenty of people to chat to! A lot of the people were on their xmas parties lol, wish i worked with them! The island provided free snorkelling stuff, free trips and kayaking so we had lotsa fun doing all the activities!!! The fun times soon came to an end when we had to leave the island and return to the main land for our flight!!!!! But before we left the island we had to ship a drunk fijian guy off to hospital as he forgot his medication and got gout???? He was sooooo drunk, put us young ones to shame!
Back on the mainland I treated myself to a cocktail out of a coconut and a delicious 3 course meal, my prawn hotpot starter was quite possibly the best prawns i had ever had !!!!! Yum !!!!! Also if ur bored at home and u have any coconuts spare try grilling them and covering them in sweet chilli sauce, its munch!!!!!! We had to awake at silly o clock in the morning to get our flight back to Brisbane!
Im now back in Brissy and off to cuddle a Koala now!! Off to Surfers tomorrow to stay with Brad !!!!! Yay can't wait !!!! Catch up soon , miss every1 back home xxxxxx
