I woke up to a little bit of a shock this morning, after waking up before my alarm and turning over there was the German guy completely naked on his bed, luckily his back was facing me...but still! Everyone seemed quiet at breakfast this morning, those who made it to breakfast that is, I don't recall seeing everyone. Oh well. After breakfast we transferred onto another boat to go to the island where we would be spending one night in little bamboo huts on the beach. The transfer seemed to take ages but the scenery was nice, someone said it would resemble the rocks that floated in the sky in Avatar and I guess I can see the resemblance.
The beach huts were very basic, just a mattress and a mosquito net over the top but what more would you need to be honest. As soon as we were settled we all went and did a 'shotgun' on the beach in memory of a tour guide who had died in Hanoi a few weeks before. A shotgun is where a hole is made in a beer can at the bottom and you put your mouth over it before pulling the ring pull at the top. The pressure sends the beer shooting into your mouth and hopefully if you don't spit it everywhere, down your throat too! Taco our tour guide can Shotgun in about 2 seconds...took me a little longer!
I went swimming in the bay a little while later which was nice, the water was warm in some places and then cold in others which was also a little strange but it was good to just sit about for a bit. Later in the afternoon I thought I would try some rock climbing. It's an easy climb and there's a professional belaying at the bottom if you get into trouble. I think my knees were definitely going a bit when I was on that cliff face and realised how high it was! I was getting a little tired this afternoon as I don't sleep well when I have been drinking but ho hum the drinking continued and I was sat playing cards with Jason in the dark as the generator was broken which meant dinner would be delayed.
Jason was kind enough to lend me his phone to call the UK to wish my dad a happy Fathers day. I think it was the shortest call in history that I've ever had with my family! When I came back someone was playing 'I just called to say I love you' which was cheesy as hell but quite apt for considering what I'd just done! Lol. I'd had a good day today but it wasn't over yet, we played some more drinking games but I think one of the definite highlights for today was still to come.
Ha Long Bay is one of only 4 places in the world where Photo Plankton inhabit the waters at night. This makes swimming at night particularly special because they react to the energy given off of your body movements and shine like little lights, sparkling in the water. It was amazing to see little lights coming from the ends of my fingertips as I was paddling around in the dark of the Bay. Something I will probably never experience again in the world but was lucky enough to do it now.
More drinking games ensued before people started to get bored waiting for the football to come on. Remote island...but has a satellite dish?? Go Figure!
