As usual in great tradition the bus was late to collect me to go to Kampot. Over an hour in fact. Although there were only 4 of us on the bus I was kind of glad it was the 4 of us. I got chatting to a guy who works at the Casino built on the top of Bokor mountain and he told me exactly how it was, so it's saved me a trip up there for sure!
I have realised that I am now used to the incredibly bad driving in Cambodia when an Australian guy said we were about to crash into something coming the other way and I took 2 seconds to look up said no we're not we're fine and we made it with miles to spare. He just looked at me and I told him in a funny way that I was a veteran of bus travel in Asia and if I start to panic then he should too, otherwise we'll be fine!
Ollys is a really nice little guesthouse. It's right on the other side of the river from the town and each person has their own little bungalow room. He has a nice little jetty on the river and offers the use to Kayaks and body boards to all his guests for free! I met a nice Aussie guy on my first full day who cooked lunch for me and the Cambodian guy working at Ollys (PK) based on a cooking course he had done elsewhere in Cambodia. It was very nice, banana blossom salad. The most entertaining thing about it was shopping in the morning for the ingredients with him at the local market. Bless, I swear he got ripped off since everything cost him $1 an item!
Beer is still really cheap here too, I've been rather tired lately so haven't had much to drink. To Tonys amusement and pokes at me preferring a 'warm beer' since it takes me so long to drink 1 can of 6% lager...a few of those and I'll be hammered.
Before beer I decided to take one of Ollys bikes over to the town to photo some of the towns monuments. This sounds a little nerdy but there is a giant statue of a Durian in the middle of the town. Bless, I think Olly and I have a slight difference in opinion on what qualifies as a safe bicycle. I am sure that bike was a death trap with no brakes and the handlebars kept moving, after injuring myself on a kerb trying to stop, I decided not to bike again for a while!
Tomorrow we're going to take a motorbike down to Kep and to a little beach called Ankoul Beach, not visited by very many people but supposed to be really beautiful.
The picture is the view from Ollys out across the river in Kampot.
