Early start this morning. We left the boat around seven in the morning and headed out to Philae temple. The temple was on an island and had some really beautiful views. They had to move the temple when the dam was built. You can tell from the columns that it had been built is the time of the romans. It was pretty ruined, not nearly as well preserved as some of the other temples we've seen. The boat ride was wonderful too. Was pretty busy but obviously not as busy as normal cause there were a lot of empty boats.
The Nile has a bunch of dams and the old one in Aswan built in 1905 is now under military control and we weren't allowed to take pictures as we passed over it.
It was cooler today than it has been. That or I'm getting used to the heat.
We went up the high dam and checked out the views from the top. It was pretty impressive. The high dam was built in 1960 and finished in 1970 and opened one year later. The largest man made lake in the world. Mustfa was telling us that of all the land in Egypt only five percent is green and ninety percent of egyptians live on that five percent of green land. That leaves ten percent of egyptians to live on ninety five percent of Egypt.
After the dam we stopped at a perfumery. I really loved it there and got a few bottles. There are some really beautiful scents. The perfume here is not made from alcohol. It's all oil.
From there we went to the unfinished obelisk. We finally got the answer of how they cut and transported the huge blocks of stone all round round Egypt.
After lunch we went out for a falucca ride round Elaphantine Island. It was nice because the sails were quite peaceful and the breeze from the water was cool but it wad also a bit boring because there wasn't much to see along the coast except birds.
Officially that was the end of the boat cruise but we have another night on board before flying out tomorrow. Now I just have to try and pack everything back into my suitcase. Funny how it doesn't seem like I bought all that much but it takes up so much room.
