Sarah and Nicola Matthews' Travels
Hi,
In Surfers Paradise at the mo. We had an amazing time in Byron Bay and didn't want to leave but we have so much to fit in that we had to drag ourselves away! We had a really nice group of girls in our room and had a good night out in a place called Cheeky Monkeys. It was full of brits as per usual but was definitely very fun.
Me and Caroline went snorkelling in Byron Bay. Caroline had a few wetsuit issues that involved her getting in and out of 3 different suits and managing to put one on backwards! I had to try not to laugh! I was a bit scared in the boat on the way to the place we were going snorkelling as i was a bit scared about what I might see in the water. However, once i put my head in the water for the first time all fears were instantly forgotten. I couldn't get over how clear the water was - i have never seen anything like it. You could see right to the bottom as clear as anything and there were hundreds of little fishies swimming around. I was glad to see that they came nowhere near me though! The best ones were the colourful ones. We saw two turtles which was really amazing, they were so cute and they just came from nowhere. We also saw some sharks! But luckily they were just little wobbegong sharks and didn't pose any threat to us. We also saw two massive stingrays swimming along the bottom. It was an amazing experience and I cant wait to snorkel in the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef now.
Surfers Paradise is not exactly what we were expecting. We were expecting some sort of chilled out surfer type town like Byron Bay. We could not have been more wrong! It has a distinct Benidorm feel to the place, with loads of high rise apartments and the sole purpose of the place seems to be to get as drunk as you can! Not that I have any complaints but it does feel a bit like being in Spain/Ibiza or somewhere like that rather than Australia! We went on a club crawl last night with our hostel which was fun. We got flashing glasses which kept me amused for ages! The crawl was fun and we made friends with some girls who have done practically the same trip as us so that was fun. We didn't get in to 4 this morning after some serious dancing and a dodgy kebab so e have been relaxing all day on the beach!
Strangely enough we have bumped in to one of our friends from college as well. He is staying at the same hostel as us with his girlfriends so its nice to catch up! Such a coincedence - however we have also over the past few weeks bumped into another girl from college, some guys i knew at uni and a girl Nikki went to primary school with - its a small world!
