Sarah and Nicola Matthews' Travels
Hey,
We have finally made it to Cairns which is the end of the road as far as our east coast Australian adventure is concerned. After a rubbish bus journey up here which included our bus breaking down I am glad to say goodbye to the Greyhound buses that have been our mode of transport up the coast. We only arrived in Cairns this evening and it seems really nice, we have already booked our reef tour and introductory dive so i'm quite excited.
We spent the last 2 nights in Magnetic Island which is not far off the coast of Townsville. The island was quite small but was very pretty. We were lucky with the weather too and managed to be on a gorgeous island and have gorgeous weather too!
We were staying at Horseshoe bay which seemed to be the liveliest place to stay on the island. It was very pretty. We had a very busy first day that involved walking on the beach and sunbathing by the pool!
On the first night we sat at our hostel bar overlooking the beach and saw the most amazing sunset. It was really gorgeous and would have been very romantic if i had a nice man on my arm! But i had Caroline so it was ok! We met some locals in the bar that night who kept us entertained and plyed us with drinks all night - i never seemed to get to the end of my drink before another was sitting in front of me so i staggered of to bed fairly drunk with a mars bar in my hand so I was happy!
The next day we explored the island. One of the locals we had met the night before offered to give us a tour and take us snorkelling. Unfortunately for him, me and Caroline has stumbled off to bed at an embarrasingly early 10.30 whilst he was still up at 3am so I think he was regretting his offer the next day!
He took us to Arthurs bay and we had a good snorkel. I was glad he was there because I trusted he knew the area, and as usual i had the jaws theme tune going loudly in my head so I wasn't feeling too comfortable! It wasn't brilliantly clear but we still saw cool fish, but then Caroline swam in to a jelly blob which we were assured was not a jelly fish but for me it was time to get out!
We then went on a whistle stop tour of the rest of the island and there wasn't really much to see so we spent the rest of the afternoon sunning ourselves by the hostel pool and generally being lazy!
We left this morning nice and early to start our monster trip up to Cairns and now we are busily planning our time in Cairns and our trip to Ayers Rock.
