Stayed by myself on Koh Samui as I had an early flight to Bangkok. Koh Samui airport was lovely. Streets of boutique shops, fish tanks everywhere and complimentary breakfast for everyone! The owner of the hostel gave me a lift to the airport on the back of his bike. I had to carry my big bag and little bag whilst on the back it was pretty hard to stay upright. Had a flight to Bangkok then Kuala Lumpur then finally made it to Melbourne with little sleep. Met ash at the airport which was nice then we headed to our hostel.
Surprised how much Melbourne looks like England. Especially coming from Asia it was a big change. Spent our first day wandering around feeling a bit lost. Melbourne is a very quirky place, full of lots of cool cafés and extravagant people. There is also so many buskers all who were pretty talented. It's a fun place to just sit and people watch. The following day we did some more exploring, a lot of shopping centres in Melbourne! Realised how poor the internet was here. Internet in Asia was amazing compared to Australia. That evening we met Paul, dad's friend from Bryanston. He took us for a drive of the city and stopped off to see some Aussie Rules training. Then headed to dinner in Port Melbourne, upmarket part of the city. Went for steak which was probably the best steak I've ever had! Took us down towards the sea in St Kilda. Showed us a spot where we could see the whole city lit up. It was bloody cold though, we were not prepared for this chilly weather! Then met his fiancé vicki for icecream in St Kilda.
The next few nights we stayed at Paul and Vicki's apartment which was so handy. Only a short train ride from the city. Explored the graffiti tour of the city, library, shrine of remembrance and botanical gardens. Whilst wandering around we saw F1 driver Daniel Ricardo promoting red bull outside flinders station. Also headed up the Eureka sky deck which is 300m high with incredible views of the city. You can see the sky scrapers on one side and coastline on the other. The Yarra river in Melbourne really comes alive at night with hundreds of people heading there after work for drinks. It was packed on a Friday, so many street entertainers too. Reminded us of London! We also managed to fit in an afternoon at St Kilda beach, it was a boiling day but the sea was cold so nice and refreshing. One evening we visited St Kilda pier with hopes of seeing penguins coming in to their nests. We were not disappointed there were loads of little penguins standing on the rocks. It was dark and we couldn't use torches so hard to get a good piccy!! I loved it though, so much better seeing animals in the wild.
We also managed to book our Fraser Island trip, Whitsundays tour and a campervan whilst in Melbourne.
Picking up the camper for a week Monday morning and heading off along The Great Ocean Road.
