Picked up our camper in Melbourne heading off on our next adventure :). Ash drove us out of the city, it took some getting used to driving automatic, we both kept going to change gear. We headed to Geelong got some information from the tourist info then headed onto the coast. Stopped in Torquay, bells bay then spent the night in a campsite in Apollo bay. We didn't realise we would have to pay for a campsite too. Apparently in Victoria they are pretty strict on overnight camping anywhere. Our campsite was right on the beach, the waves were huge aswell so we didn't fancy a dip that evening. We managed to cook chicken and rice on out gas stove at the back of the campervan.
The next day we found the archway for The Great Ocean Road and got some cheesy pictures here. Then stopped in Lorne as it was a scorching day. Ash fancied doing some surfing so we hired a surf board and two wetsuits, the guys through in a free belly board for us too. Dad would have loved it!! Ash started off surfing whilst I belly boarded. I'm a bit of a pro after all the years practising with dad! The waves were so big they took me right into the shore. Ash tried to teach me too surf, it's so difficult. I got a bit freaked out, once you're in the waves feels like you can't get out. Managed to get on my hands and knees a few times. Ash managed to stand a few times too. He thought it seemed a lot harder than Bali for surfing. Felt we deserved our tea and cake after that, it then did start to rain pretty hard!!
Kept on driving and headed off track to try and find some cheap camping. Ended up in some woods, I spotted a big furry ball on the floor. It turned out to be a koala with a baby on it's back. It walked in front of the camper then headed to a tree and just stopped and stared us down. I couldn't believe how close we were. That night we stayed at Bimbi Park which was also a reservation for koalas so we saw lots in the trees there aswell.
Following morning headed on some more windy roads. Another sunny days so the views were amazing!! We are really loving being in the campervan. Didn't realise how close we were so stumbled across the The Three Apostles today. It was incredible. Seen so many pictures of it so to felt really strange seeing it in person. The waves were huge there aswell. Drove a little further onto.... The views were maybe better there and less tourists!!
Stopped in Port Campbell for tea, found a nice italien. Headed out to a campervan at the next town as we were told it was cheaper. We visited the bay of islands at sunset. This may of been our favourite spot, loads of separate islands that had been eroded at different shapes. Again you can see why as the waves are unreal.
Bit of a cloudy cold day today so we did some inside sight seeing. Went for a cheese tasting session which was yummy!! Then onto a chocolate shop. We didn't realise how close we were to Liana so after a brief phonecall to her and Craig we decided to attempt to find Lianas house. She lives in the middle of nowhere, really felt like we were in the outback!! Near a town called Hamilton. Spent an evening with Liana's family drinking wine in theirvamazing garden. Saw a possum in the garden too. The stars there were so bright aswell as no other lights for miles. I really wanted to see a kangaroo, lianas family see them everyday. They are just nuisances to them. The following morning we collected eggs from their duck and chicken (or 'chuck' if your Aussie) enclosures. Then made breakfast with these. After we visited one of their neighbours farms. Craig and Ash had a go a shearing the sheep. We all got the task of trying to round up the sheep. It was very amusing. Sheep are so stupid they all freaked out and started climbing on each others backs. No brains!!
From Lianas we headed towards the Grampians (what is it??). Found a lovely campsite right next to the mountain. It had a nice pool aswell, perfect!! That evening we had prosecco (living the high life, also forget to share it with Craig and Liana oops!) sat next to our camper whilst surrounded by Kangaroos. My first experience of Kangaroos in the wild. It was the coolest experience!!!
The next day was boiling hot. Decided to attempt the walk to the 'grand canyon' and Pinnacle. It was a walk/ rock climb which was fun. It said 2 1/2 hours up and down. We managed to get up in 45mins and down in a bit more. Ashs competitive side ;). The views the from the top were beautiful. We could see for miles, it was a bit unnerving standing on the rock edge. Mums idea of hell!
Then visited a few other look out points and a waterfall. We could definitely spend longer here. It reminds me a bit of the highlands just a lot hotter!! We had to head on though as the camper had to be back in Melbourne tomorrow.
Drove for a few hours towards Melbourne. We've only used free maps we've picked up to navigate round Victoria. I'm pretty impressed. Stopped at a campsite for the night then drove on in the morning. Arrived in Melbourne in plenty of time so we decided to drive into the city and drop our stuff at a hostel. That was a tiny bit stressful. They have weird driving rules in the city.
Spent the following day finishing our Christmas shopping ready for our night bus in the evening.
Next stop Sydney.
