After an enjoyable bus ride with giant ibis (the nicest bus company in cambodia) we arrived in kampot. Endured the same hassle of tuk tuk drivers in your face the minute you step off the bus, once you choose one it's fine. We were staying at Samon village, meant to be set out like a real cambodian village. It consisted of grass huts and tree houses right on the river! On the first day we rented a kayak and went up the river, pretty amazing with the mountains around you. Attempted to go for a swim but then decided against it as it was pretty brown (later saw a snake in the river so phew).
On the first night they hosted a Khmer party for a couple that had been staying in the village for a month. It was Khmer music and a free buffet! It really gave us a feel for Cambodian culture, they do like a party! Passed around home made whiskey shots which burnt like hell!
We hired Motos to go up the mountain, I revved a little to hard at the start and nearly flew into the busy traffic giving the guys a heart attack. Kind of got used to the bike only managed to nearly run people over once more haha! Riding up the mountain was surreal, looking over the gulf of Thailand and through all the jungles we loved it!! At the top of the mountain there was a torrential rainstorm which soaked us, white shorts were not a good choice today.
Spent the evening in town then went driving around on our mopeds as we had to give them back in the morning.
The following day we were feeling active, so cycled to Teuk Chhou (local rapids and water dam). It was around 8km each way. Bikes had no gears and were pretty rusty but made it there and back! It was a nice place but didn't fancy swimming and the rapids were pretty fast, there were locals paddling so we paddled with them, was quite refreshing.
Kampot is very laid back everyone spends there time reading by the river or relaxing in the shade.
Next on to Kep to visit the famous rabbit island.
