Etty Bay & Tully
792 KMand 851 KM 5 September 2011
Were going on a cassowaryyy hunt! One of the guides in Paronella Park advised us that there were 2 fairly tame Cassowaries that basically lived on Etty Bay.We instantly thought - well thats it!Off we go!The van flew through the countryside and around the winding hill which led us down to the beautiful bay.The warning signs were good - "don't feed the Cassowaries"..... "drive slowly - Cassowaries".....We were feeling lucky.
Before I stepped out of the van I did a througher scout round to ensure that no Cassowary was going to disemboul me as my feet hit the ground. The coast was clear. We edged our way to the sand.... nothing. As we ventured a little further to the rocks I decided that was close enough for me.Not a chance I was going to risk entreing their teritory. Not for Sam though. He went climbing over the rocks, peering behing bushes (although these things are huge so he probably would have spotted it within an instant!) and clambering across to the next secluded bay.
Not one.Not even a tail feather.Couldn't believe it.Our hunt for the Cassowary was over.We left the calm secluded bay, having enjoyed our stroll from one end to the other, a little dissapointed.
Driving back along the country roads listening to the local radio Sam didn't know what had hit him as I yelled - "STOPPPP!! STOP THE VANN!!!!"There it was!Our first Kangaroo!Onlya little one but it was there for sure.Staring at us from the roadside grass.I wipped out the camera and caught his hind legs as he bounced away from us.We were over the moon.
