Sarah had to spend the day in bed because she picked up the travelling bug while Dani experienced what it was like to be a lone traveller. Dani read on the hammocks for a few hours and then went in search of the beach. After walking 5km and a few taxi men stopping to convince her to get in she eventually found it. It was defintently worth the trek.
5 days in to our travels and we are now experts at making friends. Our Australian friends had moved on so our new friends where the Dutch and American girls that had moved into our dorm. That evening Sarah was feeling a little better so we brought them for our 30 cent tacos down the street, which were just as good second time round.
The next day we were ready to go find us some sea turtles. Snorkels in hand and with two new hostel friends we waited on the street corner for the collectivo (local buses that stop wherever you want) to bring us to Akumal. We were listening to the advice of our hostel owners to ignore everyone no matter what they said or offered as its a public beach and everything free. We turned down many offers of a guide to show us the turtles ( they are in shallow water so not sure how long it takes you to qualify as a guide), life jackets (also essential for shallow water) and even an offer of a 2 for 1 on Mexican boyfriends on Sunday. After our first venture into the water the most we saw was a swarm of fishes. But on our second go we spotted two huge turtles, it was so amazing they were huge and just so calm chilling out on the sea bed. What wasn't calm was when the tours of people also swimming realised you'd spotted one it was like snorkels at dawn. Beware of the flippers coming at you from all angles and the turtle soon disappeared. Next stop on our collectivo was Tulum beach itself and our first set of Mayan ruins to explore. We didn't see Justin Bieber flashing the ruins apparently we were a week late. This beach has the whitest sand ever and clear turquoise water.
That evening after we finished the dreaded packing of the backpack we picked up a few more friends and we went on the hunt for fish tacos and Margaritas. It was our last night in Mexico so we had to tick it off the list. We said goodbye to our hostel friends and got on the bus to Belize.
