Our Colombia journey begins in Cartagena where we spend our first morning being tourists and seeing as much of the sights as possible before we get our bus to Santa Marta. After seeing the castle, the old town, stocking up on supermarket essentials and spending at least an hour in pigeon Spanglish buying pharmacy essentials we were en route to Santa Marta. We arrived at Dreamers Hostel and couldn't want to come back there after our trek with the pool and hammocks being so appealing. But before we could enjoy any of that we had a four day 43km trek through the Colombian jungle to complete. The next morning we met the rest of our group and set off in the back of our Land Cruiser on a sweaty two hour windy road drive finally arriving at the start point full of energy. The first day of the trek was actually a lot easier than we had anticipated so energy levels were high when we arrived at the first camp. We swam in the natural pools, had dinner and played uno and finally the time arrived for us to have the best night sleep of our lives in the hammocks. One by one everyone fell asleep except for Dani and Sarah who by now realised they had hyped up a hammock sleep way too much as they lay under the mosquito nets swinging from side to side. Wide awake and trying to evoke our inner zen it was a long night. Setting off on day two we so realised the route for tougher with lots of uphills and never ending dirt paths. We really got to know each other on this trip as trekking for 7 to 8 hours a day meant the deep and meaningful conversations were in full swing to keep or minds off the journey ahead of us. When we got to our second camp we were so happy as it seemed more authentic jungle with no electricity, candles everywhere and surrounded by tropical jungle sounds. We were at the base of the lost city and wild arrive there the next morning but first we had to deal with the busiest jungle camp ever. With a queue forming for the tables we had to retire to our hammocks at 6.30pm. In order to entertain ourselves we started a game of 20 questions which soon expanded and had people shouting answers and questions from hammocks dotted around. By 9pm everyone started drifting off and as it was a crowded camp we realised the hammocks were closer than ever as we were all sleeping almost under one another. Next morning we set off on the final journey with our indigenous guide Abel and were so excited to finally see the lost city. We were the only group who had a Tayronian Indian guide and it was such an amazing experience as we performed different ceremonies and blessings as we entered the city. After climbing the 1,236 steps and taking in the amazing scenery we met the Mamos ( tribal high priest) and began the journey back to base. After filling up on a massive breakfast our afternoon kicked off with a five hour trek, it was mentally challenging as we all were starting to seize up and kept thinking we were almost there. We finally arrived back at camp and the next morn we trekked back to the start point. Everyone was in pain and walked separately blaring the tunes but we arrived back for lunch where it all began and enjoyed a well deserved beer. We got back to dreamers hostel and spent the next few days partying in Santa Marta, enjoying the pool and sunshine. We said our dreaded goodbyes to Colin. Next stop Cartegana with Orla and Jean.
