On the 5th we travelled to Phonsavan. A tiny little town in Laos famous for 'The Plains of Jars'. These are groups of massive jars placed usually on a hill in the middle of nowhere 3 thousand years ago. We went to visit these jars, which quite frankly is the only thing to do in Phonsavan, to see what was going on. The jars themselves are pretty incredible, the size, how they got them to the sight from the quarry 90km away etc but the main thing about them is that they only appear in this one province of Laos in 68 different sizes and no one knows why? There were many theories floating around our group including some sensible - food storage, whiskey stores, burial grounds, to the absurd - aliens, giant hide and seek area, frisbee golf. The theories got more and more ridiculous as the day went on! The day after we were off again, our first stop in Vietnam - Vinh. This journey required a border crossing which always adds complication to the proceedings. In any case we lucked out with the bus as there was 6 people for the whole coach and it was a VIP bus (this does make it sound better than it was). We had snot bread for breakfast as that was the only thing to eat, well it was bread with green, squashy lumps in it. I'll leave you with that mental image. :-)
