Monday 11th February - Bangkok
We arrived in Bangkok yesterday and checked into our 4 star hotel! We are still slumming it!! We got up at the crack of dawn and went on an organised tour with Wat, the funniest Thai tourguide ever!!! What a character! Such a change from the strict organisation of Singapore. We went to see the golden Budda (who looks a bit like R2D2!) but seriously it was amazing and a beautiful sight. For years the Buddha was surrounded in concrete and nobody knew it was inside, they decided to move the statue in the 1950's and someone cracked the concrete by mistake! It's a bit like Indiana Jones this! Once it cracked, they saw the gold inside and hey presto there was the budda!! We met a monk who sent us away with good wishes and gave us each a bracelet, he also soaked us with water. He seemed a right cheery soul and seemed very excited to see us both! We then went to see the infamous reclining budda. It was HUGE! very breathtaking and an amazing sight to see. The architecture is totally mind blowing. This was very much a day of taking pictures and 1 hour into our tour we think we were on Number 80! Then we went to the Grand Palace, a beautiful array of buildings and temples. As the King's sister had passed away in January, there were hundreds of people from all over Thailand arriving at the Palace to pay their respects. We visited breathtaking temples and saw some amazing buildings. It was very beautiful. We also visited a Gem Factory on the way back to the hotel. Us not being into shopping that much thought we wouldn't be too impressed but within 15 mins of entering this fantastic place, we'd both brought some jewellery!
Tuesday 12th February - Bangkok
Another early start for our Floating Market tour. To get to the market we went on a 'gondala' type boat through the canalways of Bangkok. It was very interesting to see the locals going about their normal business and seeing how they live. The canal water looked very dirty. We arrived at the Market and were slightly disappointed as we thought it would be alot bigger than it was and also we had to get out of the 'boat' and shop on foot on dry land. We wanted to haggle on the boats themselves. We still made some purchases though and Charlie has discovered her natural forte in life is to haggle!! Queen Haggler!
Wednesday 13th February - Bangkok
Today we went to Siam Square and was amazed by how Westernised this area was. Very posh shops which didn't really impress us that much so we decided to go.. wait for it... to the CINEMA!! yahoo! We couldn't not see Mr Depp in Sweeny Todd while we're away :) Paid for the tickets which we thought were a little bit pricey seeing as we were in Bangkok (eight pounds each equiv), not realising that we had brought tickets to the luxury cinema! opps! We really are slumming it aren't we! The cinema was like a private showing with a maximum of 20 seats, all set in pairs. There were only 2 other people in the cinema so we literally had the place to ourselves! The chairs were like Joey and Chandler chairs and were the most comfortable things we have ever reclined in!! Charlie did think that she was going to get her decent nights sleep here as it was sooo comfortable but the film was too good! We were given silk blankets and cushions and the chair was remote controlled to move up and down so you didn't even have to get up to get your drink!! Pure luxury! In the eve, we ventured out into Bangkok to check out the bars and clubs. We saw the sights i.e. prostitutes, transvestites and 70 year old men who can hardly move yet still have a young thai girl on their arm, eugh.
Thursday 14th February - Bangkok
Decided to have a day at the hotel and chilled by the pool. We called in Mr KFC for dinner and had it sent to our room - this is surely what Valentines day is all about!!
